Waxoyl removal

I'm planning on re-Waxoyling my chassis soon and have read various threads about removing the existing Waxoyl. I've heard that steam cleaning is an effective method and contacted a local company who recommended using caustic soda and a steam cleaner. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this? It's pretty nasty stuff, I was wondering whether it would do any harm.

Any particular reason to remove the old stuff? Unless you;re taking the chassis back to bare metal I don't see what you're gaining?

Caustic soda - are they having a laugh? Sounds a bit vicious to me. I'm fairly sure that Waxoyl disolves in white spirit so you could try that, but I guess it would take a long time and a lot of effort.

I read on one of the previous posts that this was generally good practice - to get rid of any salt or other nasties that had got stuck to the old Waxoyl. If it's not necessary though perhaps I won't, it's an awful lot of work!

They seemed to think that steam cleaning alone wasn't sufficient. I did think of using white spirit, but it would take a good few days. I've found a 4-post lift that I can hire, which would make the job easier but it would still take a fair while (and at £25/hr, would cost a bit!)

I wouldn't try and remove the previous waxoyl. There's about a gallon and ahalf on the car. I have just tried to remove one very light coat off the Griff and it has taken me around 16 hours to get the majority off. I used hot white spirit through a parafin gun. Very messy , and takes a long time. The inital coat of waxoyl went on when the chassis was totally clean so I wouldn't worry about it having salt under the first coat.
