Hi all,

I've been told that the (original SS) exhaust on my S has rattling baffles that means it makes a most unpleasant sound in 2nd but is otherwise sound. I've had it suggested that a cost effective repair (which is what I'm after) involves cutting the middle of the exhaust out, removing said smashed baffles and then welding it back together.

Knowing little more about exhausts than a tea-leaf knows the history of the East India company, I thought I'd field for suggestions from you lot? (As usual) I don't want to have to spend a fortune, don't think a full new exhaust is required, but don't mind paying a bit more for work that will improve performance/sound while I'm at it.

Thoughts?

Don't know which system you have but I had the same annoying problem at high revs last year. I opened up my box (so to speak) and found that there were pieces of baffle breaking off the front oval section and being forced into the main box. Having removed the offending articles and rewelded the main box it was off with the oval section and replaced with two straight pipes to the manifold. Job done and sounds so much better

That sounds similar. Seems like I should get it sorted - I've a service due soon anyway. Thanks.

No worries. Let me know if you want any photos of the exhaust as the car is in its sum of pieces at the moment for some chassis work and repaint.

Interesting stuff. I am doing my head over this resonance (in all gears at specic rpm). I have completely cut off the oval section and replaced with straight tubes (a vast improvement), and welded straps to the outside of the centre box (a bit better again), and the only thing left is the wavey shaped plate inside the centre box, which is stitch welded to the outer skin. No surprise that it resonates really.
When you have described that this part was removed, what replaced it? Has anyone come up with a descent exhaust design yet, ie round cased which will not resonate. And then theres that small mater of ground clearance....nice to know TVR consideed the exhaust when designing the car?
Oh yes, my problem is probably worse, because I have fitted a 24v Cosworth V6, which probably has greater gas flow, and definately sounds the tits.

CTE, did you check inside the main box when you cut off the oval. All the buzzing on mine was caused by a couple of pieces of baffle no more than half an inch square that were jammed under the wavey bit.

Thankyou for your ideas. I did check under the wavey plate, and it was clear. The top of that box is coming off this weekend. Whats going back is another matter!
I like doing trackdays, so 123dba is a bit too much, but sounds wicked fun though.
