Can someone help me out here? I've always wondered what are the most beneficial and common sense stages to go through when trying to eek more power from a V8S, parrticularly if a Mark Adams chip is in the plan somewhere. To me it seems pointless to have a chip if the engine has other issues that mean it already doesn't perform to its best.

Do you play with the timing, the fuelling, better cam, etc BEFORE getting the chip?

Is there a 1st stage, 2nd stage, 3rd stage list that will make sure that you don't ruin the work you've done previously too much...?

Sometime this year I would like to 'invest' some money into improving the driveability and smoothness of my engine and perhaps up the power a little if possible.

Advice appreciated.

it seems to me the best bet is to get the thing on the rollers and spend £200 - £300 on getting everything right to start with, before investing in chips, cams pipes etc
i'ts surprising how much power can be reclaimed with fuel preasures, timing , new plugs etc
one of the big problems with rover based lumps is the cost of tuning you can chuck £25+ per horsepower at them which obviously gets really expensive after a while
lots of people here have had a good go at tuning rover engines so there should be an avalanche of expert posts on this subject

I would invest in Mark Adams chip and time, get it on the rollers and let Mark work his magic. I may be wrong (wouldnt be the first time) but its the fueling, timing etc that Mark works on to get the best from the car. He will also be able to tell you from the characteristics of the car whether the cam is good or not etc.... For me that would be the first port of call?? if you stick it on the rollers now you will have to pay more to stick it on later when it needs remaping anyway....?
