Stupid question

Im just in the process of putting a new alternator in my S2, The replacement came without the pulley/belt wheel and fan so these obviously need to be swapped form the original. The only thing is I just cant get the bloody nut off the spindle despite lots of WD40, brute force, pipe extentions on the allen key and spanner for extra leverage. I've even tried heating the nut with a blow lamp but still no joy. Oh yes and assuming the old one has the same thread as the new I am turning it the correct way.

Before I take a sledge hammer to the thing any advice...

You could try putting it back on the car (I assume you are trying all this with the alternator on the bench) and tighten the belt as much as it will go and use this to prevent rotation while trying to loosen nut, you can put more tension on the belt by pushing down on the long length . Perhaps the most effective way is to buy a new pulley and cooling fan from the alternator supplier. Take your old unit to match the pulley size (they differ and its important to get the correct size). Dont forget a new nut and a NEW BELT while you are doing it, 99% of people fit the old one and thats false economy. sTeVeR

getting the nut off the old one is easy with a wheel-nut type air gun to *shock* the nut free. any tyre fitters will get that off for you ..

i wouldn't recommend putting the new one on with a air gun thuogh as damaging teh new alternator probably isn't an option, but that's the easy bit anyway ..

took it to tame local garage and they sorted it for me.

now I've got a new problem (trend beginning here), the alternator is back on and the battery charged but its been out of the car so long (approx one week)the immobilizer key no longer switches off the immobilizer. I'm tempted to bypass the imobilizer any ideas how to do this or fix the problem?

The immobilizer is a Laserline 921K
