To cut a long story short my S1 started hesitating under load. I eventually traced it to a worn out fuel pump. Changed the pump and everything was fine - for the last six months anyway.

Driving along last weekend and the car just cuts out. Luckily I was going quite fast so I had enough momentum to coast into a small farm track. Absolutely gutted - first break down in 3 years. Once I got the car back home I found that when you turn the ignition on the pump makes a single clunk noise and thats it - no whirring as it primes the system.

I've tried powering the pump directly from the battery and I get exactly the same thing. I've now taken the pump off the car and given it a good shake. There were a few paricles that fell out, but nothing that looked like it would jam it. Put it bak on and it still will not work.

So what should I do? Has anybody else had a similar problem with the pump jamming. I expected it to get noisy or do something but not just stop - expecially as it has only done a few hundred miles. Is there any way of testing the pump or have I goy to buy a new one? I guess I alredy know the answer - I need to fit a new fuel tank to eliminate all the rust particles that are probably floating around and also a filter before the pump. I thought the tanks would have some form of strainer on the pick up pipe - but my one did not have anything!!

Any advice would be appreciated.
