The Budget...Is the new car tax fair?

Just heard the results of the budget on my way home from work. I hear that car tax for large engined 'gas guzzlers' is going up to around £215.
The radio report was focussing on people with big 4x4's, but the bit that really annoyed me was an interview with someone saying that if you can afford a £40k - £50k supercar with a big engine, then you can afford £215 for car tax...well how does that argument work with a £5k - £6k classic car then? Also my S2 can do 25mpg at least, much better than some 'smaller' engined cars!!!!!
Looks like all us S owners will have a big tax renewal bill soon

I hope so, my tax was £165 last year...they didn't say anything about exemptions when I was listening earlier?

March 2006 - £210
March 2001 - £190
1973 - £175

Couple of obvious thoughts,
Someone has a 4x4 who does just 5,000 miles per year versus someone like the transit van (doing 20,000 per year ) I followed today chucking out all sorts of shi! in my general direction Thick, thick black stuff ! How can that be right ?

Also, how can it possibly generate any kind of significant amount of tax ?

Just whats their point ?

Ah well, perhaps I can use the extra we get in child allowance to cover the extra tax for the motor

When you subtract the 'administration costs' it probably doesnt make any. Which is exactly the reason we scrapped 'vehicle excise duty' in France.

See here...www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm#Private. Car tax from 23rd March for cars registered before 2001 (I think that's most S series) is now £175. £10 increase IIRC.

Current rate is £170. I just paid mine. So increase is £5.
