Replacing the fuel filter

I am going to replace the fuel filter as part routine maintenance, as I am sure it has never been done. Apart from high pressure fuel still in the hoses, is there anything else to be aware of? Does the tank have to be empty first ?

Also, according to the Haynes book for the granada, it says to switch the ignition on/off 5 times after the new filter is fitted to prime the fuel system before starting. By changing the filter, am I at risk of causing air locks in the fuel rail, and so be causing lots of trouble for myself ??

Done it loads of times and its an "on and off" easy swop. An obvoius point is make sure the flow arrows point the right way! Oh and I hope you like the smell of petrol...............

I'll make sure I am not laying under it when I undo the hose connections then.

You have evidently not seen how far the stuff can spray, then (even with the system depressurised first). Your hands and arms WILL be soaked!

How can I release the fuel pressure from the system before disconnecting the pipes ? Is there a bleed point somewhere on the engine ?

On the fuel rail on top of the engine. Looks like a tyre pressure valve sticking upwards in the centre of the rail.

It's an older EFi system and not a great pressure there so slackening the connection slowly releases the pressure, or so I found anyway.

Modern EFi is a different story!
