My V8S is running far too rich at the moment and I suspect the temperature sender is duff, probably leaving the choke on all the time. Can anyone point me to exactly where on the engine the little blighter is.

Oh, and can anyone think of any other reasons for running rich.

Any major problem with the EFI system will eventually throw it into 'limp home' mode which is incredibly rich.

The coolant temp sender is in the water jacket at the front of the inlet manifold, you will see it behind the distributor. There should be two senders; the single wire sender is for the temp gauge, the sender with an injector style minitimer connector is the ECU coolant temp sender. You can check it by measuring the resistance. It should read roughly 5 kOhm at zero Centigrade, roughly halving for every 20 Centigrade rise. It's also worth checking the resistance at the ECU plug as well as directly measuring the sender.

Thanks Green,

I'll check the resistance out over the cars cooling period when I get home tonight. I will also have a quick check of the ECU just to make sure there is a signal getting through, I hope the wires are the same colour when they reach the other side of the bulkhead I take it you put the sensor in some ice water to measure the resistance at zero deg C.

BTW if the sensor checks out are there any other reasons for limp-home mode.

Thanks

The resistance at zero C is irrelevent, it's just the easiest way to describe the calibration curve so you can work out what the reading *should* be at 70, 80 90 degrees where it matters.
