Brighter Headlights

Reading previous threads I realise some of you guys, like myself, have been unhappy with the performance of the S headlights. Well I decided to do something about the situation, coming to the conclusion that the best option would be Mod-Wise brighter lights kit and Philips Vision Plus bulbs. Just like to say that this has improved the lights enormously – excellent distance on main beam, nice white light and much, much brighter - money well spent.

Well the lighting kit is reasonably easy to fit, but is quite time consuming, this is because you have to remove the two front inner mudguards and headlights.
Basically, you pull back the H4 connector that goes on the nearside headlight to a point where you have sited the relays contained within the kit (I sited these by the side of the windscreen washer reservoir), this then connects via a small piece of wiring. You then run new wiring to both headlights, and fit two earth wires to the chassis earth points. You also run two feed wires, also from these relays, to the battery, this will supply the extra power. This then makes the original connectors, the ones that you disconnect to remove the bonnet, redundant, I taped them up to keep them dry. To allow the bonnet to be removed now, the new wiring is fitted with weatherproof connectors, which hopefully should be better that the originals, which always seem to cause problems if they are disturbed. That’s that, no drilling or fitting of connectors.

That was my inital plan... just need the bulbs confirming really...!
I spoke to PowerBulbs and they were able to tell me what bulbs I needed, so it might be worth giving them a buzz.
Are your additional lights driving or fog lamps i.e. long straight pencil beam or short wide beam. Mine are fog lamps, despite being wired in with the full beam.
If yours are the same, I don't know if you'd see much benefit in upgrading the bulbs in them.
I was planning to replace my existing fog lamps with driving lights, and since one of them's now been smashed by a stray stone on the motorway, I think that plan's imminent.

Driving or fog? er... who knows?!?! Think David Beckham is brighter...
Assuming that yours are also wired in with the main beam, the best way to tell is to switch them on and off in the dark and see the difference it makes. If they seem to throw a short beam, and mainly light up the curbs then they're fog lights; if they throw a much longer beam, like the full beam, then they're spot lights.

Re the driving lamp units, I've got them as my next job to do and bought them from autofast, price is for a pair of light units, bulbs etc.

certainly driving lamps (even tho the switch on the inside of the car has a fog light icon on it). They are switched with the headlight full beam!
The fun bit is going to be getting my (ample) body into a position to be able to get to the bloody things...gonna be a weekend of colourful language and grazed knuckles...or i might just go for a spin in the sunshine and leave it til next weekend!

I can certainly see the logic that you're employing there, but mine are also switched with the full beam, but are most definitely fog lamps!

It seems to be luck of the draw as to whether they're wired with the full beam, dipped beam or sidelights, a la TVR 'standard'. 
Mel - Spoke with Modwise this morning and got the impression that the wiring kit had to be modified to make it fit; did you have to get them to change the kit or did it fit as it was? Don't mind a bit of hassle but they all but persuaded me to not buy the kit off them until I'd spoken to someone that had done the job..
Anyone else know how easy it is to swap front fogs for spots? One of mine is blown now due to a stone chip and rusty reflector so needs to be replaced. I thought if I repaced the refelctor to spot shaped I'd get the desired result. Only thing is, they are wired as fogs so only come on with low beam; would that just be a case of replacing the relay?

One PHer has done it... I had a similar conversation with Modwise myself quite recently...
