Gearbox oil leak

I have removed the propshaft and I find what looks like a shallow groove on the splined end where it mates with the seal in the gearbox, the seal is right on the end of the housing where the propshaft enters the gearbox. I can`t figure out how to get the seal out without resorting to brute force and ignorance, also, surely there shouldn`t be a shallow groove on the propshaft where it mates with the seal in the gearbox, can anyone shed any light on this? and is the splined part of the shaft off of a sierra/granada or is it a tvr item. Thanks in advance for any help.
