Saw this on ebay!!
Just a few questions is this really cheap? Or not!
Could I possible run a TVR day in day out, doing a lot of miles?

I would love a TVR and as it's classic insurance it shouldn't be that bad to insure! Should I wait to buy a car like this until i can afford to keep my current car as a everday car and a TVR for the weekend?
Is it worth putting a bid in!!! I could be just being impulsive but if it's a bargin I may just put a bid in!!!

It's an S1, the first model of the S Series with a 2.8 Ford V6 engine. Seems most of the good S1s at the mo are selling for around £4k.

The bids haven't met the reserve yet, so I would assume it'll go to £3500 or thereabouts before bidding ends. At the mo it would be a bargain, if the car is straight and looked-after.
As for driving it daily, there are several people on here for whom their TVR is their main or only car. I'm sure they'll be along in a mo. If you drive it daily, maintenance is obviously very important and these cars prefer some TLC. You can't just put some oil in every month or so and expect the car to last. A weekly or daily check is a good thing depending on how many miles you're doing.
With these cars it's best not to buy at the lower end of the market unless you want to make it a project.

As long as you look after the, they are fine, it's when they are neglected that problems present themselves.

You could do a lot worse than having a look at some on this site, generally enthusiast owned, which is important, and most of them known by someone or other, pistonheads cars tend to pass through pistonheads hands ... if that makes sense.
ie. my old S3C, psychobert owned it, then I did, then minimax, then me again, then sold to a new ph'er.....small old world on here.
Not all cars sold on e bay are dogs - I sold my fully restored M Series on there a couple of years back and that was in outstanding order - if you win it you are perfectly within your rights to not purchase if you feel it has been mis - advertised when you see it in the flesh, the best thing to do is ask the seller all the right questions and see how forthcoming he is with the answers, whats your budget ?? and have you checked the classifieds yet ??
I would gladly use my S as an everyday if the nature of my work allowed it but sadly not at the moment but the S comes to work with me at every given opportunity - of course the drive always seems to take me the long route when in the S as apposed to shortest route when in the BMW.

Budget: £4000. No more! because on top of that theres servicing petrol insurance etc.
I'm thinking of waiting a few months and keeping the celica though for the winter, prices will be down in the winter won't they?! Because i'm a sales rep i do alot of miles in the car so want something that will go on forever so to speak, but i don't want a typical repmobile!!
I take the longest route in the celica because i just love driving so that could be a problem, i'd probably activly AVOID my destination in a TVR but there you go!!
This is probably going to sound quite unberlivable i was really surprised i can insurance for the same price as the celica, now i'm REALLY getting tempted!!!

I have had my S3 for 3 1/2 years, used every day. Keep it well looked after and it won't bite your wallet (or purse in your case). Mine is kept outside all year and so far only let me down twice (touching nearest wooden object), once the throttle cable broke and the other the imobiliser failed.

Why not seek out a local S owner and go round for a chat and a blat? I'm sure most people on here would be pleased to help you know more about these cars, and probably offer some good advice in person (with lots of pointing and looking under the car) for when you go looking so you know what's right and what's not.
Decent S1 for £4k, yes. Mint one for £5k.
Judging by what's gone through PH Classifieds lately, that is. Obviously we don't know what sellers have been negotiated down to.
The more you know about the car from talking to owners and reading the relevant threads on this forum, the better informed you'll be when buying.
Alternatively you can pay Rob Ingleby or someone like him to find you a good car, but it costs £250-£500 for that kind of service.
Don't forget to get any car inspected. £50 for an inspection by one of the specialist independents (there will be one near you, or the seller of the car) is money well spent.
If the car on Ebay is near you, contact the owner and go round for a viewing - perhaps someone off here with an S1 will go with you.

Your profile says your in Derbyshire so why not have a day out on the 3rd of September and go to the 'Big Northern Gathering' up near Harrogate. Details of times and locations are in the Events section.
Last year there were 20+ S's there from all models and conditions. Would be a good chance to see how they are all different.

Good idea may just come along! Although i have agreed to go to a thing in denby on the midlands forum! Oh getting a bit busy this schedule!
And i'm in no rush which is good, am still enjoying my celica but would love to find out more about TVR know i will have one certainly not a case of if it's just a case of when!!

£4k sounds a good amount for an early S. I'm considering selling my S2 for about 5 (with a 1k plate). But it all depneds what you want. They are not cheap to run in terms of fuel, but you would already know that. They are fantastic fun, give a major thrill factor, and I still get youngsters shouting (nice!) things in the village. TVRs really do give a feel good factor. The only reason I'm thinking of selling is I've a V8S and thinking of buying something else as well.
4K does look like a good price for a good S1. I would definately advise spending as much as you can if its going to be a daily driver; don't spend over the odds for a low mileage example if you are going to put a lot of miles on it, but do look for a good history.
I used an S3C everyday for about 3 and a half years doing about 35K in it. I did have some problems, but nothing you'd not expect in a car that was 12 years old when I bought it.
I now have a V8S and a daily hack, purely as I was doing 500+ miles a week. Other big advantage of a 2nd car is that I can park it anywhere and not worry about it in some places I had to go for work that I'd have worried about the TVR.
