Buying a TVR S2
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a TVR S2 (from around 1990).
Is it realistic to have a budget of about 4,500.00 Pounds to buy a good example?
Are there any other tips in general? I've already bought the S-Series bible from Steve Heath, very informative!
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Cheers from the Netherlands,
Roel

HI,
4.5k will buy a decent example of the model. They are pretty bombproof, good fun and worth every penny.
Mechanicals are robust, but check the chassis for rust, especially the outriggers (outside bits under the outer edge of body front to back).
All parts are readily available. I've had an S3, and had great fun with it.
Plenty of good ones on ph classifieds, always a good bet as in general they are enthusiast owned, and have a history that can be checked - mind you, I like to buy a car on the condition it is now, it's nice to have a historic service history, but in reality if that's old hat and the car hasn't been serviced for ages, it doesn't really matter, buy on condition rather than miles as well - they go for a long time if looked after.

Thanks guys for the responses!
I'm intending to buy one at the end of the year (in Winter, I think that drops the price a bit as well).
I'll skip to Dutch now, sorry instinctive behavior ;-)
Niels: ik hoef niet meteen in Engeland een auto te halen. Nederland is natuurlijk gemakkelijk. Waar staan deze auto's te koop?
Cheerio,
Roel

Or in English Again,
Niels, I dont need to go to England to Buy a car. Holland is easier naturally. Were are these cars for sale?
Roel,
I am also on the lookout for a S. My problem is that I would really like a S3, because it has more to offer: better 2.9 engine, longer doors, much prettier dash. S2 and S3 are hard to find in Holland and cost around 17.000 euro or more (if you find one). S1's are easier to come by and better in price (13.000 should buy a nice one), just look at www.marktplaats.nl or www.autoscout24.nl (look within Europe). You can off course also look at the clubsite (www.tvrcarclub.nl). Also the colors of Dutch TVR's are very conservative: dark green or dark blue. In England you can find this type of TVR in Burgundy Red with Magnolia interior and red piping or Grey with red interior; the choice is much wider. So if you can live with a RHD TVR, the prices in UK are very interesting: you can probably have a decent S3 for about 7.000 pounds, wich means you can have it on your doorstep in Holland for the price of an average quality S1.
And because I have only S1-money and don't want to wait a few years untill I have S3-money, having the steering wheel on the 'wrong' side of the car becomes less and less of a problem...
By the way: where did you buy the S-series bible from Steve Heath? I want it too.

I don't mind buying in the UK, because I think a British sportscar can easily be driven RHD, since it's meant to that way. Also the choice and prices are much more attractive in the UK (as the previous speaker already mentioned). So I think it will be the UK.
I'm looking for a later S2 with the new engine and the old dash (around 1990). I'm currently tracking the Pistonheads Classifieds, AutoTrader UK and Ebay UK. Are there any other sources?
I bought the TVR S-Serie book from Steve Heath on Ebay.
Cheers,
Roel

Roel,
Please keep me informed about your plans for buying a S in the UK. I am very curious how the procedure works. I myself have seen a pretty cool S3 with Cosworth engine on PH Classifieds, but I am wondering how I should get it to Holland if it could be the one I am looking for.
If you write me personally at tvrooom@planet.nl we could discuss our plans in Dutch (sorry PHers).
Paul.
