2 false starts

My S1 failed to start a few months back but with a recon starter she was back up and running. Then after a week the same problem - I took the starter back to my local dealer and swapped it for another (bosch). Two months later and the same problem - the solenoid clicks but the motor will not turn. The battery is perfect.

Surely it can't be another faulty srarter?

Anyone on here experienced this or know what might be causing the problem?

It’s a bad earth / dead battery, or a combination of both. In fact I doubt if there was any thing wrong with your original starter in the first place. There are several earth straps on the car each will need to be taken off cleaned up and put back. I think there are at least two on the front of mine and I had one on the back from the battery (probably not with your S1).

tried the earthing points and also ran a separate earth from the starter to battery - but still no luck.

Any other thoughts?

You need to trace it through with a voltmeter and see if the battery voltage is holding up (should be a minimum of 10V while cranking and 12V+ not cranking) and if not, where the drop is occuring. If you're getting a good voltage across the starter and it still isn't working, I guess either a duff motor or perhaps the wrong size/shape/alignment/whatever.

Thanks for your help guys. The problem was a frayed +ve at the starter motor - all fixed and now starts on the button.
