S1 and unleaded
Discussion
I'm confused! Please could somebody explain a little about engine and chassis numbers, as i am having difficulty in dating my car and it's engine.
It is an early S1 registered in 1988 but with a 019 chassis no. The engine no. is DO277 - 16.
I,m really interested in unleaded running capabilities and i know to look for markings D or E on exhaust flanges (mine are heavily pitted).
Does this mean I have one of the first 20 S series cars made and more importantly, did it have a dusty old Tasmin engine fitted from the TVR basement! (if it helps, the car has a ski hatch and dual bonnet catches)

My S1 is chassis no 19107 and engine no D027720.
It also has the two bonnet pulls.
I always use Optimax which is unleaded and every 4 tankfuls add a bottle of Millers.
I have now had the engine rebuilt and it is converted to unleaded so I just use Optimax.
With the early S1 there is less to go wrong, no electronics in the fuel injection, window winders(from VW Golf), cable pull boot release and manual door mirrors.
Have fun I bet it sounds good.

Ski hatch and twin pulls puts it in the first 20 but a late one. My S1 was reg sept 87.
As for the Tasmin engine and unleaded you need to look at the flanges. You cannot tell anything from engine or chassis numbers. At a guess, I would suspect that it is OK as the changeover was in 82-83.

Thanks chaps, I feel a little more confident now. It's nice to see that i'm not the biggest anorak here (look at the time bills1 logged in!
I do have a copy of the Bible and note the location of the flange markings, although I really can't see any (Steve Heath frightened me with "all S series cars should have unleaded friendly heads, but some Tasmin destined engines may have got through").
My car's only done 40K and is still a virgin mechanically, so I hope to keep it that way (and to save my cash). Perhaps i'll play it safe and keep using Super unleaded and Redex.
