I had new manifolds fitted and new gearbox and engine mounts at the same time. When I picked up my car it made a terrible baning noise so I took it back and the noise for a short while dissapeared. It has now got to a stage where it's embarrasing to go over a bump because of the noise so I decided to have a good look underneath. I have now discovered that the sump is banging on the anti-roll bar. There is about a 3mm clearence so I thought I would take a look at the engine mounts and they seem to be adjusted to there limit to raise the engine as much as possible.
My question is, is this a normal gap between sump and anti-roll bar ? could it be the drop links or anti-roll bar bushes that are on there way out.

Answers very much apreciated

dont know much about the s series but I do know that 3mm is far to close for any suspension component to be near anything,
is the anti roll bar mis- shaped? is it possible that its been fitted upside down bringing the part that runs below the engine upwards?

No not misshaped anti-roll bar looks ok and bushes seem ok too. I did wonder if the engine mounts were the right ones ?

right, I've just fitted new mounts to mine and I have a 15mm gap, the mounts are 2" thick, it's very probable that yours have perished and allowed the engine to drop, a quick fix would be to pack the mounts up with a few shim plates. roll bar runs flat across the body under the engine so wouldn;t make any difference however fitted.

The mounts were fitted about 6months ago so hopefully they haven't perished, but I'm now thinking that if you have a 15 mm gap that they are the wrong size /type which would explain why the engine is so low.

I reckon about 25mm clearance, however I did have to put about 6-8mm of shims on the mounting as the one I bought was thinner than the original. I noticed whilst doing it that the chassis mounting plate has a vertical slot in it as opposed to a round hole if yours is like this maybe you could fit a thicker mounting (assuming your current ones are at the bottom of the slots)
I bought the EM670 from the following company for about £8.00 ea delivered
www.southwalesprops.co.uk/propshaf

If I was buying again I'd obviously get the thicker ones.If you want to try just raising yours up the slot and shimming both sides of the rubber I have plenty of 50mm Dia slotted Shims which you can have(saves taking the mounting off) again just check the position of the studs through the brackets if they are low down you have room for shims.Let me know if you want to try the shims.

Same appplies Chris plenty of shims if you want some.

Thanks all for your valuable input as always you have given me the answer to my problem.
Thanks for the offer of the shims Ken but I have contacted the garage who fitted the engine mounts and they are more than happy to make it right. Good old customer service although perhaps they should have got it right in the first place my sump must have taken a right battering!
