Hi

Help, I think my S2 has PMT! Doesn't matter how nicely I treat her or buy her new (gold) things she still refuses to be nice to me.

I've recently re-cored the radiator, replaced some dodgy looking hoses and, replaced the throttle pot (and loom) for the 'new, improved' gold contacts version that seems to be recommended. Whilst I had the bonnet off I wire brushed and hammerited the front end of the chassis in a fetching shade of blue. I even got up at 7am in the morning after it was all put back to gether to wash it down and remove my greasy finger prints before driving into work.

So why, with all this attention is my S2 now sulking as bad as ever?

She was fine for a day or two and then on the way back from the Hants TVRCC do I noticed some hesitation whilst decelerating. Whilst sitting at lights the idle started to become noticeably lumpy and then cruising at 2000-3000 rev's with light throttle, lots of 'hiccuping'. Acceleration is fine though.

Had a clean of the sparks and leads on Friday night but that seemed to make no difference. Noticed what I can only describe as a buzzing noise coming from the top of the engine when it was hunting around at idle. The Gunson tester gives me variable results, either 'no fault found' or I did get one report of 'low inlet manifold pressure' but couldn't get it to repeat. The idling problem is not always apparent, at times it will stall at idle, other times it is smooth as anything (this can change within minutes). It has the feeling of either a fueling problem (MPG never better than 22) or an intermittent electrical one.

Anybody got any good ideas what could be the problem? Or recommend a good rolling road near Reading/Bracknell that might be able to help?

Can you swap the new loom back to the old one? When I got a new pot for mine it came without the new loom and it works fine. Changing the wiring manually to simulate a new loom made it do exactly what yours is doing and I had to change it back. Either Ford are shipping a pot with gold connectors that doesn't require the new loom anymore or the wiring has already undergone some modification prior to us owning them. Ford said that they weren't showing any modified loom when I ordered my pot, so who knows.

Can't swap the loom back as I cut it out and threw it away. But I did check out the other threads that said how to wire it up, which I followed. I would have thought if it was cabled up wrong it would not work all the time rather than intermittently.

However thanks for the suggestion I'm going to to review the wiring again just to make sure I have not introduced additional resistance due to cr*p soldering technique.

If not I think it's time to call in the experts.

I swapped the brown/black and the brown wires around, which seemed to be the indicated route and it definitely did what yours is doing. I will investigate further this weekend to see if mine has already been modded further along the loom.
