I have been driving my newly aquired V8S for about a week now. SFR engineering reckon things are OK for the time being. Paid £65 for a new accelerator cable (incl fitting), however could do with some advice on engine sounds....any light greatly appreciated
The engine has a knocking sound low down somewhere near my feet....it is definately getting louder and wondered what it might be....I hope it might be a bolt on the exhaust system coming loose and vibrating; is that a possibility?
I am having big trouble changing gear when the engne is not up to operating temperature, especially first to second...it is fine when Ive done a few miles, is this normal and what could it be if it isnt?

I'm afraid I can't really offer any specific advice for the V8S, but I think the nature of these cars means that you're more likely to hear noises that might be masked in other cars with more soundproofing, and then you get to listening for the slightest noise and worrying about everything you hear!
Anyhow, I hope you get everything sorted satisfactorily, and that it all turns out to be inconsequential stuff. Then you can get on with the business of enjoying your new beast!

I can only speak from personal experience and my V8S slips from first to second nicely the only gear i have problems with is reverse and this is normally sorted by selecting another gear first. Have you checked the oil in the gearbox ?

I had the exhaust manifold gaskets changed recently on my V8S and this presumably resulted in a minor misalignment of the exhaust system that caused an annoying knocking sound that was reverberating through the chassis. Take the car to a decent garage and get them to look at the exhaust system for you, my problem was caused by cigarette paper thin clearance between exhaust and anti-roll bar. There is also a clamp on my system that sits uncomfortably close to the engine sump area, but was not the cause of my problems.

I have exactly the same difficulty in gear change on cold days. My car's only done 45k so I would be suprised if it was the gearbox / synchromesh.
Is the clutch biting point on your car really low to the floor as mine is. This might explain that the synchros are working harder whilst the box's oil is cold and thick, which then eases when warm. Perhaps we either live with it or change the clutch? (or just start off in second, it'll hardly labour the engine!)

Yeah starting in second does the trick and it gives you a nice long burble until you have to change up
The biting point is about middle but I think the synchros working harder before things warm up is valid.Mine has only done 25,000 so Im not letting it be the gearbox

He did say it was from Blackpool and would last longer - although it would be good to hear your views on that!
its a cable! how much longer can it last!
and besides, I cannot imagine why TVR would engineer their own cables when they are happy to go to the parts bin for about 50 manufacturers to build the S.
Ren, I'd ask the garage you bought the car from which gearbox oil they've used. I'm a V8S owner now, having changed from a 350i. At one service my mechanic replaced the gearbox oil with one recommended in the 350i handbook - the car began to suffer the gearbox symptoms you describe. I had the oil changed for Dexron II automatic transmission oil and it was back to all round smooth changing immediately.
The knocking does sound like the exhaust hitting the chassis somewhere, after manifold and gasket replacement mine knocks along the transmission tunnel, as mentioned above there's not a lot of room to play with.

From what I can make out the engine oil used was 10w/50 A3 fully synthetic and the gearbox was L super ATF - if you know if those are the right ones for the car it would be good to hear from you, at least then I will know either it is the problem or it aint.
It must have been nice to suddenly find a nice smooth gearbox again.
