Evening,

Anticipating the oncoming colder weather with attendant gritting/salting of the roads today seemed like an excellent day to take my V8S out for a run...

Somewhere on the M5.....

Mrs B (not the world's greatest TVR fan): "What does this switch do? Is it the self destruct switch?"

Me: "Ha ha. It's for the electric windows normally, but seeing as these aren't working at the moment, not a lot. See"

<Flick, play with joystick, flick, play with joystick, flick...>

Mrs B: "Oh look, the oil pressure has dropped to zero, and the voltmeter, and the temperature, and the fuel gauge...." (The battery charging light had also come on and the indicators were no longer working) "But, hey, no-one ever looks at those do they?"

Ah. Six hundred miles into TVR ownership and my first problem.

Now, I can see from the Bible that all of the instrument dials, the warning lights and the indicators are on the same fuse so I'm hoping that this will be a relatively quick fix in the morning- this would imply that the electric mirrors are on the same fuse, although I can't seem to see this confirmed in the Bible.

Can anyone set my mind at rest?

Also, the fuse and relay diagram doesn't seem to show the relay for the mirrors. Presumably this isn't secreted anywhere unusual....? I may as well see if this is responsible for the faulty mirrors whilst I'm trying to sort the fuses out.

Or it could be the switch has given up the ghost and gone dead short circuit.

Of course its no longer made, though I believe Maplins make a suitable alternative - search on window switch and I'll have a dig through my archive to see if I've still got the spec - it may be on my work laptop though.......

I thought I needed one in the Autumn, eventually not thankfully.

AFAIK all relays & fuses are located in the passenger footwell - if you've not been in there before, enjoy......

Yes it does sound as if you've blown an ancillary fuse, I guess you've got a short in the mirror circuit.

Sounds like a case of feminine influence ('fluence')on a strictly masculine hobby !! Thankfully Mrs whiskey is more besotted with our V8S than I am --if that is possible. It does mean that 'quick blasts' have to be 'together', because as soon as I turn the key and 'the thunder starts' she is on the drive enquiring why, and if I do get to go 'round the block' (20 + miles!) alone I get the third degree when I get back !! I don't know which is worse !

I agree definately fuses but be careful they are there to protect the electrics and stop potential fires, so if possible 'go-in' with a volt/current first. Hopefully just a 'Tiv foilble though'

Good Luck 'in' the passenger footwell - the only other really horrid place is the drivers footwell - trying to re-wire a lost earth, some time ago but still a painful memory.

C-J - and the misses!

And I thought the fuse box in my wife's Fiesta was awkwardly sited!

Utterly convinced for a good 20 minutes that it must have been sited somewhere else. Quite a lot of cables neatly tied up in front and against it so not immediately apparant at all even when I was on my back in the footwell. Hmmm. But then I guess you all know that already...

Still, gave my neighbours a good laugh (head first in, feet out through the roof) and at least it wasn't anything more serious.

Thanks for the advice

Harvey

I guess you've found the fuse, a 20A jobbie up and left a bit from the centre of the panel on mine IIRC. I managed to swap a couple of wires to the joystick after removing the switch panel, result was when I tried adjusting the in/out of the mirror the fuse popped. Took a while and a few fuses to work out what was going on but I do now have a note (somewhere) of my wiring colours to the joystick. I also replaced the rocker switch when trying to sort the problem, the new one is a Maplin DPDT Centre-off which drops straight once its retaining clips are filed off.
