Low throttle - poor running

Hi there,
This is my first post to the 's-club' since I am usually on the wedge forum. However, I hope there is someone out here with words of wisdom...
I have a car with the Ford 2.9i V6 engine (an old XR4x4). I think that it is the same engine which saw good use in the S series.
The engine has always been great except that recently it has started 'stuttering' at low throttle openings. Whenever the revs are below 2,000 it feels as if the car is trying to stall - no matter which gear I am in.
I have changed the idle speed control valve and all the usual leads, sparks, rotor and cap etc but still no luck.
I think the 2.9 has some sort of fuel shut-off when you take your foot of the accelerator. Could this be the problem?
I hope someone has some good ideas since the old XR4x4 is slightly better suited to the snow and ice than my wedge!

2 further possibilites - both of which I've experienced on my 2.9.
1 - Air Flow Meter (if you have them?) sensor covered in crap. Take off the filter and have a look into the AFM - should be a wire-type thing sticking out into the air-flow. On mine, both needed good clean with a bit of petrol and a cotton-bud (very carefully mind!).
2 - Fuel Flow Regulator - mine failed and took some tapping with a socket extension bar to free-up. As it recovered it would only allow low pressure giving poor part throttle running. Replaced with the uprated FSE fuel flow regulator.

Had a similar problem on a Peugeot 205 1.9GTI - uses same Bosch injection system I believe. Fuel is shut off when throttle is closed and engine RPM is above a set point. There should be a micoswitch on the throttle body that tells the ecu when the throttle is at idle. This could be kippered.
