now that i have sneaked off from the office i want to try and fit a replacement aerial bought a couple of days ago.

how do you get the old aerial base off? I have removed the phillips screw on the underside and the rubber mount and washer that then go between the screw and the underside of the mounting. The metal cap bit is now loose and wobbles around but doesnt want to come off altogether. what am i missing?

Washer on the top.

On the top there is the black plastic bit.. on top of that there is a chrome (ish) ring around the aerial... unscrew that...

sorted mate. very odd though. my old aerial had snapped in the mounting, leaving the base still in situ. on the underside mine washeld in place with a metal pin with a built in washer stopping it on the underside. on the top side there was the remainder of the aerial base. presumably you get to the "top" bolt underneath where the aerial is mounted. I couldnt do this due to the broken bit still being there. I guess the options were to drill out the remainder and see if that was the answer or........

take a hacksaw too it

guess which approach i took!

new aerial all mounted and now wired up. still not great reception but it is a TVR so there is an allowance. Its infrequent that the radio wins over the exhaust note anyway so it was more for sake of looks and completeness than anything else. Having said that, it is vital i have reception for any saints games if on the move at the time.

Hacksaw! Yep... I had some of that action too!

I bought an electric jobbie from Hellfords... works a treat (now I've earthed it properly!).

What's all this about crap reception in TVRs..? Jeez... I get all sorts... French radio... strong signal on every frequency! Headunit is a decent(ish) Pioneer...

Podie, did you earth the arial directly, or did you earth the wire mesh on the inside of the wing and rely on the arial connecting cleanly with that?

Wired it to the same earth as the rear lights...

apart from when I am next to your car, when I cannot actually tell if my engine is running or not.

Sorry.. One of two reasons I suppose why its best to drive in front of me, (the other being avoidance of bits that fall off at speed..) Really must get some more lamp surrounds sorted before Back Home..

Shnozz... did you sort the aerial?!?

Did you go for the 'leccy jobbie, or the rubbery-boingy variant?

just went for a cheapo rubber one which was more or less identical to the one that was on it before and presumably original. its wired up into the wires previously in position but still not great reception. As i said though, i listen to the radio once a month at most.
