S1 Fast Idle & Auxiliary Air Valve Problems
Discussion
Need your help again chaps.
Anyone know about the cold start system and Aux' Air Valve on the S1? My car won't fast idle when starting from cold so I changed the air valve for a scrapyard donor, but it has made no difference. When cold, the valve is only partially open which prevents fast idling. Am I right in thinking that the valve should be fully open when cold and then close when hot? Does the valve rely on any other means of power to open it when cold? It seems a bit odd that both of them are the same. Perhaps they're both knackered?

Craig,
Are you sure the valve is only opening partially. From memory the hole in the plate when fully open is shaped rather like a segment approx 1/8-1/4 of the size of the total hole and this may give you the impression that it is not opening properly.Again from memory I think it's effect on idle speed is minimal more helping to give a smooth idle while the engine is cold.
Hope that helps

Thanks Chris,
That's a great help, here's another question. I think that my fuel pump may be plating up as the Fuel pump relay burnt out a few weeks ago, which I replaced. The new one is working ok, but starting when warm and cold is becoming increasingly difficult and less 'Crisp' than before. Do you think it may be worn and lowering the fuel pressure and do you think any of this is related to the warm up regulator?
Thanks in Advance

Unfortunately this is where I run out of constructive help as my S1 suffered exactly the same symptoms you describe and I never got to the bottom of the problem even with the help of my friendly neighbourhood auto electrician. The car never failed to start even in the winter it just took a lot of turns getting there. Sorry I can't be of more help.
