I can assure you that long before I got my S I used to wind down my window to listen to the glorious exhaust note when I saw one... I remember the missus being well pizzed off with me following one down the A1 with my window open for some miles (i.e. until the queue cleared and he was off !!!) Anyway wo cares about them ? we KNOW ! 
I have been asked a few times if mine is an MG 
Perhaps people are just too used to the more showy Tuscan front-ends and don't expect that noise from what looks like a gentlemans car.
But, I've had just as many compliments on the noise from both my S's as I did my Cerbera, so for those with well tuned ears they certainly sound the business

I got really concerned lately as I drove across the Tyne bridge in Newcastle at night as there was a 4x4 range rover right on my tail flashing his lights - as there was someone in the inside lane and another car right in front of me I could not pull over but he managed to get on the inside along side of me - I looked across expecting a confrontation but this giant of a guy was hanging out his window shouting at me to give it some throttle, we were in a tunnel by this time so I duly dipped the clutch and obliged, he started punching the air shouting "awsome mate" this really made me laugh - I have had quite a few experiences of folk winding their windows down for a listen and of course it is simply mandatory to drop a gear for them as you fly by.

I get the feeling that the S series aren't recognised much by the general public.
But the car always seems to generate the 'right' kind of attention, I think. I love it when you can see people squinting thinking "What's that?" or when little kids see/hear it and go "Whoooaa!! It's a TVR!!!"

You certainly don't get the "flash git" comments that acompany some of the other cars, although the respect tends to come from the older generation I've found.I've had a few experiences where people have stopped me for a listen. One was when I was stopped at a set of traffic lights with the top off and this young guy walked up to me. I thought he was going to try to sell me some illegal substance, he looked that sort of dude but he was only interested in the car. As he left he asked me to blip the throttle so I gave it large. He nodded "nice man" and walked off. A chav in a blinged up Saxo behind me was also revving all 1.1 litres at his disposal. He got the finger from my druggy friend. There have been others but this stands out.
Generally though, I think the S is not as well known as other TVR amd the people who recognise them tend to know their cars a bit better. That said, my daughter reckons the S is a bit of a classic sports car shape and we are going to try an experiment. She works with a bunch of total non-petrolheads and she is going to take pictures of the S and other TVRs and ask them which is the more desirable. We'll see.

I drove in to a B&Q car park (don't ask - ok, we were lost) in convoy with a Tuscan, Tuscan S, Griff and Chimaera. Some kids playing on their bikes all stopped and gaped and one yelled to me 'yours sounds the best'
I'm not convinced myself, following that Tuscan S was as close to being in an artillery bombardment I'd ever want to get.
