I know that there is a Topic somewhere regarding this topic, but I need more help on different types. I'm Overhauling my brakes and I found that my master cyclinder is shot. So I need a replacement, HOW MUCH eek £160+.
A Chim master cylinder costs around £116. Has anyone fitted one of these, what do they come off?
I have check Breakers & Ebay for a remote Res one (SAAB 86-89) but no joy. So I'm now thinking about replacing the Remote Res type for Res mounted type. Any help would be greatfull.

Hi

I also have the Saab master cylinder and servo and replaced both at vast expense recently. I discovered that in order to fit the Ford servo and mastercylinder I would have to elongate the holes in the bulkhead or drill new ones. If you don't when you install the Ford equipment the filler cap for the integral reservor is on the side of the mastercylinder, not the top and all your brake fluid falls out!!

I also discovered that the pushrod length in the Saab servo is shorter than the Ford servo. so its probably not wise to interchange the units.(Saab servo with Ford master cylinder and vice versa)

I tried scrappys for the stuff but the non-ABS Saab 9000's the parts come from are rarer than rocking horse pooh.

You can get a seal kit (for around £20 from www.partsforsaabs.com) to repair the mastercylinder if its not too far gone.

Unless you're prepared to drill holes in the bulkhead (- which I wasn't), then its a case of biting the bullet and splashing the cash - and you really don't want to know how much the servo is!!!!

Some one else may be along with a better solution shortly, I guess it really depends on how much faffing about you're prepared to do.

Cheers

Tom

The Fiesta type m/c with integral reservoir retails at about £60. I don't know if the servo would fit so worst case you need to buy a new servo too, if it's original it may be due for replacement anyway. Can't remember what I paid for the servo but it wasn't a hundred quid! You can get all these parts even cheaper if you shop around, some on ebay have gone for silly money (sadly not to me, though).

Cheers so far,

Interesting point about the mount holes hadn't noticed. I had a Ford Fiesta Servo & Mastercylinder (not the correct type but same mountings) hanging about, I've tried the SAAB master cyclinder and it fits. My Fiesta Servo has an adjustable pushrod so you can use both. Brakeparts.com have both master cylinders listed but of course they are not in stock.

I will need to check the mounting holes tonight and see which route to go down. At least I have 2 types of Master Cylinders to try.

The orginal Servo and Mastercylinder are rotten - pretty blooming scary!

Seen lots of those around but that version is with Modulators (ABS). The later S's & Chims ran have to run with NON-Modulators Master cylinders BUT this also comes in a version that is for solid disk only.

Aha, I've been wondering what those things are on others I've seen. What do they do?

This is what I have been told. The 2 units have a small non-return valve that slow down the return pressure; they work in conjunction with an ABS Modulator. I have taken one apart to see what is inside and it looks about right.
It would be possible to use this master cylinder BUT this is a non-standard part plus they use different coupling sizes so you would have to replace 2 of your brake nuts, flare the pipe again...
