EEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahem, sorry about that, but after four months of scraping rubbing painting replacing struggling and putting up with my dear wifes complaints about how much time I have spent on it ("Her" now although I still have not named her), the winter refurb is over and it is now officially spring.

last of the jobs completed by midday yesterday and a pause before turning the key for the first time since Boxing Day - Click-whirr-vroom - she started first time !
ran for a few minutes and switched off to top up coolant and oil, started again no problem and ran until temp hit 90 and the fan cut in. oil pressure at a steady 50 but noticed that voltage staying around 13/14.
further checks revealed a few niggles which were quickly sorted so I lowered her off the jacks and took her outside - she sounded great !
My mate arrived with the 41mm socket and the nut was tightened and the spare replaced. Not sure whether to carry the spare or ditch it in favour of those cannisters ?

So, apart from the alternator - which I'm not sure about, everything else seems fine.

what lights should come on when the ignition is switched on ? How do I test for a charge ?

I now consider the refurb complete and working/running issues ongoing...

thanks for the advice and support during the last four months , see you on the road sometime I hope.

You know, I would rather chew my own leg off than do all of that again... biglaugh
the most difficult bit was convincing the missus that the refurb is NOT my hobby and I was NOT enjoying it... I did of course get some satisfaction in completing each stage, but there were times when I wondered why I didnt just go and buy an MX5 and just drive... the sound of the exhaust when it started finished any remaining thoughts along those lines... Now I can start my hobby... owning a TVR !

Let me know if you need one I have a spare somewhere you can have ,I am going down the Lucas route as I dont like the 2500rpm to start charging set up.Neither do my neighbours.

Let's have one minute silence for brother JLS

(see other post) He started his body off yesterday. He's got a long way ahead.. a way of wanting to hear the sound...etc... I know the pain JLS...

Thanks everyone...

and I might take you up on that offer Ken, but like you, if mines kaput, I may look at an alternative as the 2500 rpm charge point doesnt make sense to me either...

having searched for Alternator problems i'm now hoping that not having an "ignition" light on switch-on means a bulb has blown/disconnected and so the alternator will not start charging - something to do with diodes... can anyone confirm or advise differently ?

Great job on car shame about alternator. To test, if you've got a voltage tester put it on battery terminals, start car up you should see voltage rise & lower with eng/revs.

These figures would suggest that it is charging, I am not too familiar with the Bosch unit but it is a little bit unconventional,I think I would carry a booster battery and run it for an while ,it may not go flat.
