Steering Rack.

Steering rack - Mine is very Notchie (if this is even a word). It past the MOT Ok but it doesn’t feel right at low speed. I’m not sure at this stage if it’s the steering unions or rack itself.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

get the front end off the ground using axle stands and figure out where the ratchiness is coming from, column, rack or linkages...

there are some recent posts on here about rack refurbs if you need them.

The steering column UJs (particularly the upper one) would be a strong favorite. In my experience racks just tend to get looser and looser as they wear, so unless you're suffering from Hollywood steering I think the rack is probably OK.

Yep it was the UJ's now for my next question, how does one go about obtaining them!

.....and brace yourself for the bill. I bought new UJs recently and top UJ was in excess of £60 while the bottom was a mere £55.

Greenv8s, what's this about protective gaiters? Are those on the column UJs?

As standard, the steering columns UJs are completely unprotected, they get cooked by the exhaust and blasted by grit. Hardly surprising they wear out. If you cover them with gaiters they last much much longer (current set roughly 150,000 miles and counting). Generic steering rack end gaiters do the job nicely.
