rear lamps?

Can anyone advise where I might find replacement rear light covers for a 1989 S3 (both sides)? Were they from the Ford Escort?

Yep - Escort Mk4. Best place to look seems to be ebay. Often available for under a tenner a pair plus postage and that is in excellent nick.

Ironically, when the V8S was rear-ended by a Mk4 Escort a few years ago, the only visible damage to the V8S was a broken tail light and the only part of the Escort that seemed to have survived intact was, you guess it, the tail light. Seriously, the TVR bodywork all sprang out so that at first glance it looked fine, and the Escort impaled itself on the TVR exhaust pipe splitting the radiator, folding the bonnet up, creasing the front wings and breaking all the glass. It really did look strange with the Escort very obviously written off and apparently without so much as scratching the TVR.

You know I had a relative who told me that the first time he saw the TVR, but I have just checked out of interest and on the TVR the Ford logo and Numbers on the lenses are the correct way up, so you would imagine, as you say, that Left is Left after all.

I think this myth has probably come about because the Griffith rear lights are mounted upside down (compared to the Vauxhall donor car).
