I've just bought a pair of ramps for those 'odd' occasions I need to get under the car - in the hope of saving the 15 minutes it normally takes to trolley jack and axle stand the car off the ground. Unfortunately the bonnet hits the ramp before the tyre does. Does anyone use ramps and have a tip for a more gently sloped access.

I allways used axle stands on the front and reversed up the ramps when i needed to.
You could use some planks of wood just before the ramps to give you a bit more hieght.

Or - if there are two of you at the time get 1 person to drive onto the ramps, while you stand in front of the car and gently raise the car a few mil. by lifting it from under the number plate while its moving towards the ramps. Same again while its on its way down.

However, the fact that this needs doing suggests that your suspension might need looking at, because if running normal ride height - the car should drive up the ramps no problem.

Mine is dropped about as far as it will go so I guess it's about as bad as any. I have a couple of pieces of 2-by-4 bolted together to form very low ramps which I drive the car onto to pick it up by 3-4". This is enough to open the bonnet right up if necessary, also lets me get the jack right under the main chassis rails if I need to lift it further.

I always used a couple of strong planks (about 80 cm long x 5 cm thick and wide enough to fit onto sides of ramp - make width to suit your own ramps design) The planks were placed about two thirds of the way up the car ramp to shallow the angle.
This worked fine with my old S3 with driving lights.
