Rattle, rattle...........

Have a strange issue with my S2. I've noticed on idle there is rattling sound coming from behind the dash. When I depress the clutch pedal it stops. This doesn't happen all the time and when it does the car is warmed up. Any ideas?

Could be the gearbox rattling - nothing to worry about loads of cars do it inc my 55 reg mitsubishi blandwagon. Stops with foot on the clutch.

A rattle that disappears when the clutch is depressed sounds like the gearbox idle shaft related. this shaft turns in the gearbox with the engine when the clutch is engaged but the gearbox is in neutral. If you disengage the clutch then the shaft stops and the rattle disappears. I had an Orion years ago (around 1989-1990) that had a spacer that rattled on this shaft and the rattle used to do my head in at junctions etc. "they all do that sir" the Ford bloke used to say, helpfully.
I would have thought the thrust bearing would make a different noise to a rattle but I have not experienced this so I would not dismiss it...

Have you tried blipping the throttle when at idle ? It wont cure the problem but you wont hear it either

Cheers for the responses. As I said, it's not all the time and more of an annoyance than anything. Funnily enough my wedge used to do exactly the same thing...............
