After waiting what seemed like an age I've got the S2 back again. New outriggers, repaired fuel tank and most importantly that good old MOT pass.
It's great to have it back and on Sunday the weather was good so I was able to give it a blast along the Military road. (I'm sure Ketvrin knows the road)

However I have a problem. Sometimes the engine seems to hit a ceiling and won't go above a certain number of revs ( sometimes as low as 2500 othertimes 4-4500). If I stop and turn the engine off and then start again it cures the problem for a while. Given that work has been done removing and repairing the tank I think that the problem is most likely to do with fuel issues rather than electrical and lead problems, although I could be wrong.
Now, the car will be going back to the garage for them to look at but before it does I thought I would ask you lot if you had any experience of this.
Does anyone have any idea of what could be the problem? What tests can I do to prove either what the problem is or to eliminate possible faults.
Many thanks

Have you renewed the fuel regulator?(sits on fuel injector housing below plenum chamber above rocker covers). Mine failed and gave petrol starvation problems. Diagnosed by tapping it gently until it recovered enough to get me home where upon I replaced it with the FSE upgrade.

Could it be the good old throttle pot ?
If the track is worn/dirty it could be contacting sometimes & not others.
I just did a search for some testing info but couldn't find any (OK I didn't try that hard).
I'm not sure if a duff throttle pot gives the symptoms you describe, but I'm sure someone will soon tell us.

It could be any of those things but the first place to look, surely, is at the work that has just been done (assuming the car was ok before that).

Changing the fuel tank may have disturbed various forms of rust / crud from the bottom of the tank, which may have blocked the main filter, the wee filter in the fuel pickup, or one of the fuel pipes. The pump might then be able to maintain fuel pressure at low revs, but not enough at high revs, creating a "governor" type effect.

You would have to check the fuel pressure and/or mixture at higher revs - I suspect fuel pressure testers ain't cheap though...

By all means adopt a "butterfly flitting about" approach to solving the problem but it would be better to start with what was last disturbed.

Many thanks for your help so far. All useful stuff.
The garage can do the clever stuff and sort it out but I would like to try to understand why the situation occurs and how to approach possible problems in the future.
My thoughts were for a crud in fuel type problem but not being a mechanic I'm having problems understanding how the situation occurs and why switching the engine off cures the problem albeit temporarily.
I suppose that under pressure crud could be sucked up to cause a blockage which then settles down when the pressure is released ( i.e. engine turned off). If so is there an easy way of finding where the obstruction is?

Also, is it easy to change the fuel filter? I have a pit in the garage so I can easily get under the car and am not a complete novice at DIY.

Cheers

I certainly do Tim but not enough in the Tiv yet due to the "challenges" I've had so far... next time you are in the area (or are you already in the area ?) you should pop in for a coffee/beer and chat, would be nice to see another S. I'll email my mobile if thats of interest...

Graham, Geoff and I have a yet unfulfilled intention to have an S run out, you should join us... I'm hoping next sundays run to the borders for a BBQ is on but as usual I have things to do to make that possible...

I've had a couple of good runs along here - just need to be careful not to bottom out in the dips! eek

Yes, I've just started a thread about this. It'd be great to have a good run with another S or two. Sorry to hijack your thread, Tim. Hope to see you and the S sometime soon. smile

I know what you are on about!!
When they say severe dips ahead they are not joking.
~ gives you a good excuse to blast up the other side 'though!
