As anybody fully re-carpeted their S as a DIY project, if so do you have any tips, what sort of finish did you get how did you get over the edging on the carpet section behind the seats where did you get the carpet from etc.

Many thanks for any pointers

Evening,

Didn't do the whole car - just the areas under the seats as water from a leaky hood had rotted the carpets away.

Started by taking the seats out and stripping out the old carpet. The piping stayed intact even though the middle bit had all but gone. Used the old bits as a template and cut the new ones on the large side using a decent steel rule and stanley knife.. Test fitted the new carpets and trimmed them up leaving about quarter of an inch over all round.

I got the edges bound by a local carpet supplier (little shop type as opposed to one of the big chains) Cost about £3 a metre. Cleaned up the footwells and scraped back as much of the old carpet as possible from the glassfibre. Laid the back edge first using a thin strip of contact adhesive and put the carpet down just before the glue had completely gone off so that I could move it around a bit if needed. Once the back edge was solid, I stuck down the rest of the carpet.

I used the latex backed Blenheim carpet from Coverdale

Only problem is, now its done, it makes the other carpet look a bit grey! Still, bought a lot of carpet and there's loads left so I guess I'll be busy this winter...

Didn't do the whole car either. But about 1/3 of the carpets were loose. So had to bond those sections again.
- Buy a good contact adhesive
- !! Remove the loose adhesive both on the car (and on the carpets if applicable) e.g. by means of scotch brite pads.
- Vacuum clean the area
- Use a solvent cleaner / thinner preferably the one as prescribed by the chosen adhesive
- Apply adhesive to both sides
- !! Let it dry until it just feels sticky, It shouldn't be wet and shiny anymore! Otherwise it will not adhere when contact is made and it will slip around freely.
- Apply the carpet starting on end and apply pressure while putting the carpet to the car. Since it's a contact adhesive you'll not be able to reposition the carpet when contact is made. So fit on forehand and make sure that ypu have enough material to trim.
- !! Buy one of these to apply pressure effectively. I think this was one of the rare utilities I bought that proved to be very useful, specifically for the non flat and hard to reach surfaces surfaces. http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/f/FDDWSR/
They also have wider ones that will be handy for flat surfaces.

Good luck and enjoy the smell of solvents of the adhesive!
