Battery?

Hi

Havent used the S much recently so it has been in the garage on trickle charge...

Used it today... to satation started ok on 3rd revolution of engine... six miles to station..

this afternoon... started again on 3rd revolution... (normally goes instantly I should add)

Needed petrol so 5 miles to tesco... warm sop fans running by the time i got there and sat waiting for 5 mins for a pump.

Came to restart the car and just got the faast clicking sound... so I thought damn not quite enough juice in the battery.

Guy jump started me... instant start..

came home 1 more mile.

Now I just thought battery is almost 3 years old and cos it doesn't get used very often and has short runs then sits for days... gets trickle charged etc that it has just failed... ces't la vie..

I went outside thinking I will have to push the car into the garage... but no.. it started ok.. 4 times I might add...

Haven't got a problem shelling out on a new battery as if the current one is on the blink I dont want to get stuck anywhere...

Before I do am I missing something else or does it sound as I susspect that the battery is on the way out?

Cant take it back under gtee as I had to cut one of the plastic base mouldings of to get it in the tray.

I would suspect either a weak battery or the starter motor suffering from the heat/age and getting sticky, or perhaps a combination. Three years isn't a bad life for a battery so you might think about retiring it now, which will probably cure the symptoms at least temporarily.

Might take a look at the battery connectors. If you see a white powdery deposit you have found your cause. To rule it out, remove the cables, clean the contact areas and re-apply with some acid free petroleum jelly. Or dedicated battery contact grease or just nothing.

The dreaded clicking noise....hmm...renewed the battery and it worked for a bit but started doing it again...had the starter motor reconditioned and it worked for a bit then started doing it again...garage man renewed heavy duty cable from battery to solenoid soldering on new lugs and it has been working great every time...some 2 months now.
This morning it did it again but started on second try...grrr...
