Exhaust tail pipe curves under diff.

I was looking at the bible over lunch and noticed that some exhaust systems for the S have straight pipes from the box to the tail, and other have bends under the diff area before straightening up for the tail pipes. Does anyone know why this was done ? Was clearance needed under the diff, or was it to make access to the diff easier with the exhaust on ? Looking on the ACT web site, their exhausts have the bends in the tail so I guess it does not affect performance.

The diff does protrude about 3/4" below the chassis rails. It would be very close if the pipes went underneath it plus you have to allow for exhaust and diff movement - both are on rubber mounts.

I thought it may have been to clear the diff. Shame as it spoils the lines of the exhaust system. I guess they found out about the problem the hard way !
