Gearbox Hell......p

Can anybody help with this one? The Speedo doesn’t work, after the usual checks concluded that the Speedo drive cog in the gearbox was worn. New one ordered, so before fitting, I checked to see that the drive on the gearbox shaft was undamaged......but its not there, feels like it has slid off the shaft, I can just feel the edge of the drive and its loose. Have I got to take the engine/gearbox out again or is there a simple answer. Only just put it all back together,so not looking forward to stripping it all down again. Any idea’s would be appreciated.

The cog in the gearbox I believe is actually like a spiral, so don't expect to feel a cog in there, more like a big screwthread. I'm not explaining this very well am I ?

If you imagine a bolt with a cog sat on the top the thread, the screwthread turns and rotates the cog (much slower than the bolt) that drives the speedo cable.

This might be tosh as I'm recalling this from days fiddling with cortinas.

how wierd is that my S3 speedo has stopped working also

what were your symptons ?

mine intermittantly worked for a while and then nothing no speedo or odometer

also what part number is it you ordered

and how much if you don't mind me asking

The S2 and S3 use an electrical Speedo sender attached to the gearbox that sends pulses to the electrical speedometer, the S1 is a cable drive to the mechanical dash Speedo. The drive I can feel is definitely the Speedo drive, but has slipped down the gearbox shaft shoulder.

Just to let you all know, apparently this is a known fault with the Type 9 gearbox the Speedo drive just falls off, needs a tail end strip down and the drive pushing back on and welded to prevent it doing it again. Only just put the engine back in !
