S3 CV Joints

I have just fitted the drivers side joints to my S3 - not without some problems.
The standard Granada joint from Partco was different from mine in that it came without any cover to accept the rubber boot.Mine was one-piece with a reduced diameter which accepted the boot. I eventually got a Granada joint from Allwoods (Notts area) supplied by Shaftec Automotive PJ11 which comes with a separate pressed steel cover with gaiter moulded to it. It also comes with clips,grease and bolts.£24.00 each which is good value. £71 from tvrparts.com
I had difficulty getting the small gaiter clip fitted and it needed to be pushed further along the shaft to avoid the boot being too compressed. The Halfords 3/8 drive Torq key did it's job OK but was beginning to slip by the time I final tightened the last bolt. One of the bolts started to cross thread despite taking care and I had to tap out before too much damage was done.
Went to Oulton Park and back yesterday and no more clunking. When I pluck up courage I may do the other side.
By the way - I also found the RHS diff support mounting broken and had to replace that as well. £31 inc delivery from Tvrparts.com

I did the passenger side on mine recently and found them really easy, the only bit of the standard granada joint that didn't fit was the circlip (re-used old one). My comments have been added to the alternative parts list www.parkersteve.dsl.pipex.com/sparts.html and the bits were obtained from Partco. You should note though that the granada had two different types of CV joint one for pre ABS and one post ABS. The post ABS ones are far more expensive than the pre and it is the pre that were fitted to my S3.

Hi there,

I'm about to do the cv's on my S2. Should I order AMK TDL3017R ? (See the partslist from parkersteve)
I'm from the Netherlands so walking into a Partco store won't be possible.
Is there an on line possibility? I can't seem to find Partco.
Can anyone tell me what's the easiest way to get a hold of four CV's?

he number you are talking about is correct it is thge 3017 bit that appears to be the common thread in the part number. Partco are part of Unipart so you may find a listing under them.

Alternatively for another supplier (I didn't use supplier, but costs appear similar and they deliver) try this link www.carparts-direct.co.uk search for Ford Granada and select the ones with 3017 in the part number

I think my S3 is showing signs of outer joint wear. Sustained vibration at various speeds, particularly when coasting. Are these the symptoms I should expect or was it different when your let go?? Haven't had the opportunity to get the car in the air yet to have a check but I suspect that the boot has gone and the joint has got crap in it.

Either those joints or a propshaft UJ. Difficult to explain but the frequency of vibration can help - the propshaft turns at a different speed (faster) than the drive shafts because of the diff ratio - if you've heard the difference before, you'd know, but as I say, hard to explain.

Only way is to jack the car up and twist all the joints against each other and check for play (or in my case on a previous car, spot the one that's obviously falling to bits).

Thanks. Hoping that it'll be really obvious once I get underneath. Anything that wobbles and shouldn't is getting fixed. Might even do some photos and a write up if I remember.

Right. Had a poke about under the car on Saturday. No noticable play in the propshaft or driveshafts though the latter both have a bit of lateral play. Is this normal?

Went for a drive. The vibration only happens when everything is up to temperature and happens at various revs in different gears though it is particularly noticable when you lift off.

Could it be the diff?

Is the vibrating definitely coming from your drive train ? it couldnt be your exhaust touching the chassis could it ? what sort of noise can you hear? high medium or low pitch? maybe it could be a worn mount - diff/gearbox/ exhaust/engine mounts all OK ? Fuel tank cradle secure ? its difficult to figure out without hearing/feeling it...

Definitely coming from the back end so not an engine mount. Medium pitch but its more of a feel through the seat than a hear type of vibration. Didn't spot any mounts that looked knackered but then I wasn't really looking. All the wheels are coming off at the weekend so I'll have another root around then.

Ok good luck with your search... it was the "when up to temp" and "worse on over-run" bits that got me thinking about the engine mounts as the engine does move around a bit on over-run and if the mounts are knackered everything thats attached to the engine (Exhaust, gearbox etc) will be moving about too so the mounts might be causing something to vibrate and cause the "effect"...

just thinking out loud...
