Fuel Tank Sender Seal

Does anyone have any tips for getting the fuel tank sender to seal tight. I have tried tightening that stupid locking arrangement as far as I can and still it weeps. It is tight initially, but after some 24 to 48 hours you get a very faint petrol smell and a v v v small weep can be seen. Is there a sealing substance (like blue hylomar for gaskets) that works with petrol that could help? At present I only fill tank to 50% unless going on a long journey to avoid the problem.

Do a search under 'fuel tank sender unit'in the S forum, and you should get to a write up I did a year or so ago.

If you've got the Ford pattern type of 'locking ring' it's just a matter of tapping over the 'ears' so that the ring bears down more firmly onto the gasket.

David Gerald used to have the gasket in stock.

Even when I fitted a new sender to a new stainless tank with a new rubber seal it leaked unless I used a sealant. The supplier of all the bits had said it would be a bugger to seal and suggested red hermitite. I don't know if it is supposed to be petrol proof but it worked and has been fine for 5 months now.

Using Red Hermatite seal has been tight for 48 hours now - no petrol smell in garage - at last!!!!

Had the same problem on mine. In the end bought a tin of tank sealant (from Frosts I think) and just painted it on both sides of the gasket before refitting. No problems for the last 3 years!!
