What model have you got ?
If it is an S1 speedo drive is mechanical by cable, but on all other models it is electric from a sender in the gearbox.

I don't remember exactly, but when I had a ford I think the speedo connector had a plastic bit each side that you just squeezed which released the catch then it came away.

Alternatively it may just have a threaded collar that unscrews - which may be tight to undo initially.

Hopefully someone that has actually done this may be able to enlighten further.

Sounds like your car is a crossover between the S1 and S2 sometimes described as an S1.5 if it has a mechanical speedo drive with the 2.9 litre EFi engine.

Removing the cable shouldn't give any problems.

When you've removed it take the car for a drive without the speedo in (but don't pass any speed cameras!) and make sure the end of the speedo cable is rotating - it may be the speedo drive in the gearbox or the cable that is at fault, are you just assuming it is the speedo?

I think all 2.9 engined cars have the electrically driven speedo because the ECU requires the electrical output of speed which comes from the gearbox sensor. My early S1.5 certainly has an electric speedo.

(But then again with TVR anything is possible)
