Just got my car back from David Geralds having had outiggers replaced and big service etc. (incidentaly they've done a good job of the chassis), and it's now making something between a whistle and whirring noise. It appears is coming from somewhere between the air filter and plenum, although it is difficult to judge as it is loudest when putting my foot down or shutting off.

It did'nt do this before. Is this normal? Is it as a result of having the air filter changed? Is my car going to blow up, or do something equally nasty?

I would pop back to DG's and show them, but the round trip is 260 miles of motorway

Any ideas?

they replaced the tube that runs down the side of the bodey, the plate and the tube which joins that main chassis in the middle on both sides (sorry not v technical) as well as both seat belt mounts (the ones in the rear arches, painted and waxoyled for 1200 + Vat. I did'nt think that was too bad. Have a look at my profile, I've started listing all the bits they did on there. Will have it fully updated tomorrow

I got various other opinions, including a classic car restorers near to me who quoted 3500 + VAT, and a main dealer who quoted 2500 + vat, both claimed it could only be done by a full body off.

DG's jacked it up. It all looks V neat and tidy.

Had a nice time chasing an early Griff up the M40 on the way there too

Sounds like a leak in the inlet system between the air flow meters and the inlet manifold. On over-run high manifold vacuum draws air in with a whistle.

Difficult to diagnose - a vacuum gauge would confirm if there's a leak, finding the leak can be more difficult. sometimes very soapy water or just washing up liquid lets you see where air is being drawn in. Sometimes it doesn't though!

Cheers Haggishead.

I assume therefore that there is nothing detrimental with this, apart from the noise?

I'll do some investigating.

air inlet leak means weak mixture - also (sometimes) the engine running on, because it keeps drawing in air...

you could end uo with a "hot" cylinder that's running at a different mixture from the others...

If it's left you can also wear the mating surface so it's a bd to seal again...

worth fixing...
