Wire screen inside air flow meter

Quick question. Do I need the wire mesh inside the mouth of the RV8 airflow meter. It does not look like it does much, except reduce the flow and stop any large objects that make it past the airfilter (of which there should be none).

Theoretically........

Mine had some bits of crud stuck to it, and was dented in a bit.

There is a lock ring around the inside edge, its easy to remove.

I took mine out and reflattened it & put it back in, I'm not brave enough to run without it! Might gain a touch of flow I guess.

A very knowledgeable engineer told me that the screen helps stabilise the air flow and produce a more consistent reading. I imagine it tends to damp out large scale eddies in the flow. Of course it also helps keep debris out of the intake but hopefully there won't be any anyway.

Curiously, the argument against running open throttle bodies with a stocking over the end (which has been fashionable in the past) is exactly opposite - apparently they cause a substantial restriction and are hopelessly ineffective at filtering the air.

Without the gauze mine used to gain nearly 10hp but lose a little smoothness low down. As for the crud it catches, seeing as its after the air filter I'd be inclined to find out where it comes from.
