My bonnet hinge (the square tube) has been seriously out of shape since I bought the car.
Anyway after some serious head scratching I unbolted my vice from the bench and got it on the bracket, tightened it and hey presto! its back to its normal shape.

The reason it was bent I worked out was that one of the mounting bolts for the threaded insert was too long - so when tightened up hard it bent the bracket.

The horizontal bolt was very bent, so I just went mad with the hacksaw and cut it off.

Problem now is I need a 12mm bolt to weld to the bit of tube, and I had enormous difficulty getting one thats not zinc plated.
I've now got some 12mm threaded bar and hope to get it welded this week.

Update soon, if work will stop getting in the way......

Why did you want one that wasn't zinc plated?

Probably because welding of zinc-plated steel produces hazardous fume.

Sorry my first post isn't very clear.

I actually cut the bolt from the bonnet that has a ring welded onto the end, which slides on the bolt attached to the chassis.

So now I need to get the ring welded to the head of a new bolt.
The welder I spoke to said he couldn't weld onto a zinc plated bolt - I suggested grinding the coating off but he said the coating goes into the metal, so he still couldn't do it. He said get a mild steel bolt (as per the original) and he could weld that no problem.

I couldn't get a 12mm mild steel bolt - everything seems to be zinc coated now - but in the end I have managed to get some 12mm threaded bar in mild steel (one metre of it for £2.20).

I've been so busy at work I haven't been back to see the welder yet.

I replaced mine using a rosejoint, it was quite simple and did away with the welded ring, May be worth a look before you get the welding done. Joints weren't very expensive.

Ken, I'd be interested to know where you got the rose joints from, looks like a great idea.

I got the studded rod welded to the original bolthead today (£2) and now at least my car is back together, its been sat with the bonnet open in the garage for 2 weeks while I sort this out.

By the way to avoid the bonnet stay coming out when working on the engine I put a cable tie round it to the bonnet catch on that side. Uses a cable tie every time but better than a bonnet on your head!

Still on ebay £11.00 a pair delivered

Also these would be handy for locking them up ,

it would give a bit more room on the bolt. They do other sizes so may be handy for other things, I think someone was looking for half nuts on here a couple of months ago.(maybe for balljoint use or something similar ?????)

Thanks, might have to get a couple of them.
I've got loads of 12mm nuts, they were dead easy to get along with the zinc plated 12mm bolts - B&Q!

Can't say I did to be honest - though the ones I got from B&Q fitted fine without a problem - I did cut the studded rod longer than the original. Might have to be sad enough to post a photo shortly.

If you are working on it still, I would recommend welding the top and bottom plates with adjuster screws on the slotted chassis part, it really does make alignment easy and costs pence.( dont know wether you spotted it on the link I posted above.
