Winter work begins.
Discussion
Well, the tax runs out today so I have put the V8s into its winter hibernation. To keep me busy I will be painting the chassis.
I have already started by cleaning the grease and old wax oil of it, this was done by driving the car onto a tarpaulin bought from B&Q for £4.00 and jacking the car up onto stands I then started by applying Gunk with a cheap paint brush and left it to soak for thirty mins, now the worst bit, I donned water proof pants and coat, laid on the floor and blasted all the crap of with my jet wash, all the grease came off the chassis fine, but most of it ended up on my water proofs, still I managed to clear all the crud of ready for rub down and treatment.
I am thinking of rust treatment followed by red hammerite and then open to your collective suggestions ???
I am also going to remove the exhaust to help with access to the chassis and as I cant quite stretch to a full front to back stainless exhaust system yet I thought I would just paint the steel one for now, again any suggestions for paint.
Thanks Pete

My word, sounds like you`ve done the worst part, once you`ve painted, a good coat of waxoyl is a pretty good treatment, pay attention to your outriggers, just my thoughts. I`ve used waxoyl on aircraft and it is good, no doubt others will be along to add other thoughts.I have already started by cleaning the grease and old wax oil of it, this was done by driving the car onto a tarpaulin bought from B&Q for £4.00 and jacking the car up onto stands I then started by applying Gunk with a cheap paint brush and left it to soak for thirty mins, now the worst bit, I donned water proof pants and coat, laid on the floor and blasted all the crap of with my jet wash, all the grease came off the chassis fine, but most of it ended up on my water proofs, still I managed to clear all the crud of ready for rub down and treatment.

Look up a product named "ACF50" - its expensive but has better claimed performance than waxoyl. expect to pay £12.50 per tin compared to waxoyl at £6.00 I used it last winter and can say it has not budged.
the key to a good finish is to ensure there is no grease left on the areas to be painted before you start sounds like you have made a good start but you will need to double check the nooks and crannies... you dont say if you are troubled with rust already and need to remove that first. If so, get as much off as possible before applying a rust "converter" like Kurust then apply the red Hammerite in a couple of coats especially on the leading edges of the chassis tubes before adding the ACF50/Waxoyl.
good luck mate, you are the only one who will be able to look at the chassis when you are finished and get a sense of satisfaction... everyone else who looks will just see a waxoyled mess. Take some photos when its freshly painted and before you apply the protection... they are good for the soul

There is a little surface rust which will need treating, i have seen the Kurust stuff so i will give it a go.
Like you say no one will see once its done, but at least i will know its right

Will the ACF50 be heat resistant as the exhaust is very close to the chassis.
Anybody any ideas on the exhaust paint idea.
Pete

If the exhaust is very close to the chassis, no protector will stay put. I have been considering wrapping a heatshield around the chassis where its closest to the manifold, but have not gotten around to it yet... done the air intake pipes and the cable from the AFM only so far.
I used a brush on matt black exhaust paint from halfrauds and am quite pleased with the results.
have a browse of the photos on myphotoalbum...
