Just getting used to my new toy!

I've noticed a slight clutch chatter, particularly in reverse or setting off at low revs in traffic.
I've been quoted £350 fitting and £140 parts for a new one. Is this a hard job to do as this does seem a lot. Could it be a DIY job?

I'm going to go for a heavy duty one for belt and braces. Has anyone had experience of these, does it effect drivability much?

Thanks

Grant

Mine went through a period of juddering a few months ago at low revs. If I pulled away with 2000rpm it was ok. It had a new clutch a few thousand miles ago and it was still hardly worn when I stripped it down during my spring rebuild.

I found that a good session of slipping the clutch made it a lot better and then over the next few weeks it got back to the smooth state that it was before. All I can think is that condensation had caused corrosion of the flywheel or pressure plate or else some other fluid had got on the clutch some how.

It isn't a very technical job but unless your TVR is in tip top condition staring a job like this will lead to other jobs needing doing.

If you feel up for it then go for it. While the engine is out replace the engine mounts - it will save you a job later. Also drain the gearbox and fit the correct oil - not with what the owners manual states. Do a search for GL4 for info on this.

I'd say if it is slight live with it and see how it develops.

Note that the generic 2.9 granada clutch kits that are in the market place have problems when fitted to the TVR flywheel and after a few thousand miles the centre rivets clash and the clutch again starts to slip at high load points (ensure that the people and or yourself check for this) as I have machined some 30 odd flywheels in the past to suit. After 8 Private mails, on why this is so...the OE plate on this car is an AP version and this is matched to a flywheel where the driven plate area (the face that the plate runs on) has an I.D. that where it drops down to the bolt facing area is 2MM TOO SMALL and requires a relief machining from the flywheel to allow the plate rivets to drop into as the friction material wears away....OR the engine side of the plate runs on the rivets and the clutch slips.
