Got my mate to sit in my S3 today and put his foot to the floor. The rocker on my throttle linkage is about 1cm off the stop at the end of its travel.

Could this mean when I floor it I'm not fully opening the throttle?

I didnt have chance to test it but if I unscrew the plastic adjuster on the linkage (shortening the cable) , then floor the accelerator, it reaches the stop. However the start point (zero throttle) is halfway down the flat part of the "J" bend on the linkage. Surely this will be more responsive (if not too much so)

I assume this can't effect tick over, but after thinking about this for a while I'm kinda going round in circles.

Will this have cured my problem or is it possible I never had one to start with?

Any ideas people?

Thanks, Grant

Unbeknown to me before the change there was a lag.
Since the change no lag.

Cant comment on the technical side (but someone will soon i am sure) cause i`m not very technical.
But the difference is excellent Grant driving

You want the butterfly to be fully closed at idle so adjusting the adjusted isn't the answer in your case. I'd look to see if there was anything stopping the pedal travel. On mine with the J shaped plate I'd still have fully open throttle and the pedal wasn't to the floor. That is part of the reason that these cars break throttle cables - you keep pushing the throttle to the floor and stretch the cable. Better to fit the throttle pedal stop so that there is no strain on the cable.

When I floor the pedal, the cable is taught and there nothing stopping it, it has 1 inch more travel to but the butterfly is now fully closed. Might have to look at adjusting the stop then!

I wonder if haveing the start point (idle) have way across the flat spot will be detremental in anyway?

Interested to hear the ref to a throttle stop Jed - I've wondered about one for a while - does anyone do one or have a simple/neat idea for one??

Would it be worthwhile to remove the inlet hoses and check the position of the butterflies with the pedal fully depressed. I would think these should be in line with the airflow at this point, now what to do if they're not scratchchin

I think I can word this better.... wink how do I know if I am achieving full throttle when my foot is flat down(I'm pretty sure the butterfly hittin the stop isn't a 100% accurate test)

Thanks

Hi I took my S3 to an indie in Chesterfield when I had problems with failing Throttle pots and they adjusted the throttle linkage because of exactly the same problem. They said that I would never have run on full throttle because of the linkage and adjusted it accordingly. The garage is AF tuning and are in the yellow pages. I would recommend them, they have loads of experience and are very reasonable so I take my P&J there for most jobs.

I "engineered" one from a bit of 20mm x 4mm metal strip, bending it into a top hat section so that it could be bolted on the inside of the front wheel arch on the rim bits of the hat (if you follow my analogy!) and the throttle pedal arm hit the top of the "hat" at full thottle. It needed a bit of trial and error to get the last bit right.
It is very important to ensure the stop is firm and rigid with no possibility of the pedal slipping to one side of it and jamming wide open yikes
