I have been looking at the hoses on the car and may replace some this winter. I did get the one from the thermostat housing to the swirl pot (I think it was from the t'stat but its the big one that runs over the fan belt to the top of the swirl pot) last year and that was blue silicon. I don't really want to replace all the hoses with blue stuff as a couple of the others were replaced not long ago, and wonder if the rubber ones are still available and if sensibly priced could even swap the one I replaced last year - so based on what I may do has anyone a pt no and source for the above large hose??
In addition I may replace the 2 hoses that disappear into the bulkhead to the heater and also the one that runs at the bottom of the front of the engine from the metal pipe and turns back up again. Does anyone know if they are just std heater hose or specials and if so pt no/source would be appreciated.
Sorry to be a bit vague but describing them isn't the easiest thing ... it must be my age or something ...!!
(Probably both!)

Hi Jim

like you I want to replace as many of mine as I can but dont want to fork out for silicone ones. I am reckoning on any hose which is on the engine being standard Ford hoses but anything between the engine and anything else - swirl tank or radiator as being special.

I have a list of these now and have most dimensions to enable me to identify the hose but am having real difficulty finding somewhere that I can "Browse" - Ford dealers seem to want the part number or the make and model etc rolleyes and factors etc just dont have any (or a decent range anyway) hoses listed on ebay never have dimensions etc... then theres the scaryards... Hmmmm.. I dont think so...scratchchin

So, when you (or we...) find the right hoses I think these should be added to the alternative parts list or kept on a spreadsheet hosted somewhere (Pies ...?)

keep hunting, good luck and lets know how you get on

The cost of a full set of silicon hoses and clips is a bit more than I want to spend right now, so I've spent a fair time trying to find replacements with very limited success.

I found a tip on here a long time back that QH part RH1888 will fit between the thermostat housing and the swirl post. It does, well sort of, it isn't quite the same as the original and I've yet to see what sort of running clearance there is to the fan belt. I should have a better idea in a week or so but it does look as if it is probably ok. A search of the odds and ends bin at the local car accessories shop turned up QH part RH1702 which I chopped up to make the two short radiator hoses. Both 1702 and 1888 are listed for the Astra 1.3 85-89 on the QH catalogue.

Kevin is right about the small bore hoses on the engine, if the Ford dealer doesn't have them silicon will be the only option. The ones from the heater and the expansion tank look to be just straight lengths so the factors should have them, you just need to measure the bores.

The one that I really want and can't find is the hose that runs from the water pump to the metal pipe that leads to bottom of the radiator. I did find a likely candidate in the Gates catalogue but, as luck would have it, it was out of stock.

Let us know how you get on with the QH hose to the swirl pot Ken; that could be a useful reference for us all if the clearance to the fan belt is OK. As a matter of interest the one I got (silicon) from TVR Car Parts was right angled with a slight kink in it as well to help it get over the fan belt so I suspect that a plain right angle may not do the job.

Is the hose you want to the rad the large diameter one from the pipe on the bottom N/S? I replaced mine a couple of years ago from I think David Gerald; it is straight with a very slight bend in it so I suspect that a straight silicon one may do the job (if you want silicon).

I thought that the swirlpot to pump hose was a QH1788 but annoyingly I don't have my notes or the label from it to back that up.

Anyway, this is what my clearance looks like and to ensure that the belt doesn't flap and cut the hose I knocked up a small L bracket to go on the alternator mount.

EDIT: It is a QH1888 that I used. I even listed that on my website so maybe I should pay more attention.

Its the one that runs from the water pump to the metal tube on bottom n/s. The other end of that tube connects to the radiator via the chopped up rh1702 hose (which is identical to the original).

I'm not sure a straight hose would work there, the tube is suspended between the two hoses and if they aren't the right shape its going to be difficult to get the tube to sit right. It might work but...........

Jed, RH1888 is definitely what I've put at the top but from what I can glean from the Gates online catalogue RH1788 looks very similar in shape and might well work if the bore size is correct. Neither seem to have that extra kink found on the original. Clearance on mine looks about the same as yours and I do like that belt guard.

The L bracket looks like a good idea; would you be able to somehow twist the edges of the bracket up slightly (to make the bit above the belt rounded more and not flat) so they aren't parallel to the belt? That could help to prevent the belt from being chopped by the bracket if it does loosen and flap about (- also if the belt got loose it could grab the bracket and no idea where it would twist to but could be into the alternator as well as cutting the belt to bits neither of which is a good idea.)
I'm not trying to belittle what has been done but it may help with what is a super idea smile

Good points, and the other thing it needs is a lug to limit the movement so that the smooth face is always facing the belt. Something for the Mk2 version then.

In actual use it doesn't touch the bracket but I made it up because the previous pipe had a nice groove in it from the belt which wasn't that tight. It is often a little thing that causes a break down and I didn't want a cut water pipe.

OK so the hoses, here goes...

1 - From Swirl bottom to steel pipe with otter = 90 long x 35 id straight (half of RH1702?)
2 - From Otter Pipe to Rad top = 105 L X 35 id straight
3 - From Rad Bottom to steel Pipe = 190 L (outside curve)x 35 id 135 deg "J"
4 - From steel Pipe to bottom of waterpump = 300 L (outside curve) x 35 id 135 deg "J"
5 - From waterpump to Swirl = Loop shaped and twisted "U" x 16 id (RH1888 or RH 1788 ?)
6 - from swirl top to thermostat = 160L x 90 x 38 id 90 deg "L" with a kink
7 - from waterpump to thermostat = around 170L x 170 x 25 id 90 deg "L" but with a kink at the bottom connection
8 - from bottom of waterpump area to steel pipe = 90 dia inside bend half round "U" x 15 id 180 deg.
9 - straight length of hose from Swirl tp to heater valve
10 - straight length od hose from Swirl neck to expansion tank.

Descriptions are difficult so excuse or correct mine... can we tie these hoses (use ID Number above) to the correct part numbers ?

I would be happy to photo each hose in situ and as supplied with the correct (or nearest) ID if we can do it collectively... then maybe someone will host the info for reference...

K wink

Jed - re the QH1888 - it looks a really good fit from the piccy. Did you have to twist it at all to get it away from the fan belt? The silicon one I have had to be twisted at the swirl pot end to move it away and is still no further away from the fan belt than yours is from the piccy.

The route the QH1888 hose took is exactly how it looks. No twisting or anything, no cutting.

Thanks for the input Jed; I'll have a look for that and think about getting them all proper rubber. One problem with this idea though is the smaller bore one (is that missing in your piccy - it looks as if the lower swirlpot connection is blanked off???) that comes I think from the water pump and over the fan belt and then down to the lower connection on the swirlpot; this was also replaced last year with a silicon one as it bends more easily to get it over the fan belt. Has anyone used heater hose for this? (I wonder if it will fit OK with the quite tight curves needed?

One for Kevin - re his list above - No 4: is this the one from the small metal pipe (that runs round the bottom of the engine from the offside round and under the main crank pulley) up to the bottom of the water pump? If so it looks like heater hose rather than 35 dia so I assume I'm on a different one here? I had a look at this one this morning and ran a piece of heater hose alongside it and it looked OK with no kinks so should be OK?? Has anyone done that here??

Blimey Jim, sounds like you are describing my hose number "8" there mate but yours is a fair length, my "8" is on the end of a steel pipe that runs from the offside under the pulley where it ends and becomes a hose which forms a 180 deg turn on a 90mm inside dia. tha hose is 15id so could be heater hose as you say...

My number "4" is a 35 mm id radiator hose with a 135 deg bend and is approx 300mm long. see pic--->

Hi Kevin - it is your no 8 I think ... getmecoat
Re the QH 1888 - I've been on the QH site and see the hoses are RH (eg RH1888 - presumably radiator hoses) in case anyone is ordering one. I've had to resort to emailling the local QH area sales manager to find who stocks them locally - ah well. Maybe h'frauds do but I gave up after 2 mins with no reply on the phone.

Kevin, no new info really - just a couple of clarifications for your list. Use RH1702 to make no3, the remainder can be used to make no1 OR no2 there isn't enough material to do both. You can get 35mm straight hose from one of the online accessory places, I forget which one but I have seen them mentioned on here, some factors may also have it. Trouble is I think it comes in 1m lengths which is enough for a few cars. RH1888 (not 1788 - see above) is used for no6.

Number 4 is the one I want to get hold of, my one is still serviceable but having replaced all the other large hoses I'd like to do that one as well.

Cheers Ken, so...

1 - From Swirl bottom to steel pipe with otter = 90 long x 35 id straight (half of RH1702 or from straight length of 35 id)
2 - From Otter Pipe to Rad top = 105 L X 35 id straight (alternative half of RH1702 or from straight length 35 id)
3 - From Rad Bottom to steel Pipe = 190 L (outside curve)x 35 id 135 deg "J"
4 - From steel Pipe to bottom of waterpump = 300 L (outside curve) x 35 id 135 deg "J"
5 - From waterpump to Swirl = Loop shaped and twisted "U" x 16 id (RH1888)
6 - from swirl top to thermostat = 160L x 90 x 38 id 90 deg "L" with a kink
7 - from waterpump to thermostat = around 170L x 170 x 25 id 90 deg "L" but with a kink at the bottom connection
8 - from bottom of waterpump area to steel pipe = 90 dia inside bend half round "U" x 15 id 180 deg.
9 - straight length of hose from Swirl tp to heater valve
10 - straight length od hose from Swirl neck to expansion tank.

keep it moving...

Been looking again at the above and think I am confused (not unusual?). I have assumed that the QH1888 is the large dia one from the thermostat housing to the swirlpot - this would be no 6 on Kevin's list. This fits with spludge's comment above and in Jed's picture which shows No6 but doesn't show No5 connected to the swirlpot (which I think is in the background and tucked behind the alternator) so is my assumption correct?

In addition I have got my old pipe from the pump over the fan belt and down to the lower pipe on the swirlpot - Kevin's No 5. We had assumed that they must be TVR specials but looking carefully it has the Ford logo on it and the following 72EG18686AAG68580(there is then a round symbol with spikes that looks like a cartoon sun)followed by 1167. I haven't checked this but maybe it is still available?
