John - believe it or not the TVR speedo is electric with a sender from the gearbox.
My speedo plays up from cold - it doesn't work at all when you first set off then flutters for a bit and eventually settles down & works properly.
Only problem with the tomtom idea is that you will need a sympathetic MOT tester.

Yep speedo is all-electric so no mechanical cable.
The wavery needle is caused by a poor earth I think - don't ask me how to fix it though - there are various earth points behind the dash.
Mine wavers when the lights are on, but is ok the rest of the time. If the lights are on AND I switch on the radiator fan, it's ok then too, because I think something is then earthing through the otter switch...
I can fix it or laugh at it. Ho ho ho...

Mine has the same characteristics as Barkychoc's, most accutely when I've not covered it in my leaking garage.
The chap who sold me mine said that he had fixed a fault on the speedo simply by tracing the earthing point on and cleaning it up- there seems to be an earthing point on the nearside that I can see when I remove the nearside front wheel- is this it?

Could well be.
I know that he had fixed this and some other electrical gremlins simply by tracing the earthing plate and cleaning them up -I mentioned that another V8S I'd seen had a speedo that hadn't worked for at least a year/18 mths (and so I'd been put off- no idea of mileage/usage cf service record). I'm pretty sure I recall him describing this as being low down on the chassis in front of the bulkhead (but may be mistaken...)
There's also a strong correlation between the intermitant fault I get and allowing mine to be exposed to the small leak in my garage roof- water runs down the windscreen and into the nearside of the engine bay.

They don't test the speedo, or the odo for that matter. The odometer in my family shed didn't work for 7 years, they didn't even notice the milage wasn't changing. Thanks but whats the Transit connector block pleaseJon.
Some owners remove the connector and solder the wires together. I put a new connector in mine like this:
