Electric Mirror help needed

Trying to sort out the non functioning electric mirrors on my S3. Has anyone got a note of the wiring for the joy stick and switch over switch? Into the joystick I have followng wires - Green (power), Black double (earth), and then orange, grey, and red into the relay, blue on its own into the main circuit. Out of the relay into the switch over switch I have black/white and black/yellow. To the doors I have brown black/white and blue. Having spent too many hours studying the joy stick and relay I have worked out that the relay switches between the left/right and up/down motors, whilst the joy stick alters the polarity of the circuit ie reverses the up-down and side to side. BUT I still cannot get the b*****y things to work!!!

Any ideas or wiring dias with same colours would be greatfully appreciated. I have the V8s wiring dia but the colours are different and practically knowing the wiring into the switches would be really helpful.

I've got a similar problem on my Griff (same mirrors).... had all wiring checked, electric getting to mirrors...... however the conclusion was the motors are siezed (something else to check as well as the wiring)

I am also having the same problem as yourself, I can get the joystick relay to click but the mirrors will not operate, and I have had all the electrics out in both the center console and the the passenger footwell, the only drawing I could find was the one in the Steve Heath book and like you the colour coding bore no relationship to my vehicle. Maybe the S3/S4's were different ? ( I have the last S Series car ever produced in 1995 S4C ) In the end as a temporary measure I have unplugged the plug in the mirror head and put some short lengths of wire in to allow me to set the mirrors up to suit my driving position and left the problem until I have more time. The only problem I now have is the electric mirror on the LH window wont work now joy must have disturbed something else !!

Think I have cracked it. The joy stick switch has a common wire that runs to both mirrors which in my car is blue. This wire changes polarity in the same sequence as the wire that feeds through the relay (orange). In my car this blue wire appears to have a break in it some where as it carries no power from the switch to the mirrors. I have decided to replace this wire with my own as it looks far to difficult to trace through the loom. If this works I should be able to offer a wiring diagram that at least matches my car and may suit others. I have tested the wiring with the mirror motor off the car and it works perfectly.

It appears that a previous bodge has caused the problems! The relay switches between the updown motor and the side to side motor and is switched by a red and grey cable from the joystick. It effectively only works when side to side (may be up or down). The green wire and the black go into the switch at either end and provide the positive and earth connections but it appears important which side they connect to.

Sorry for the length of this post but it may help. I could provide a picture of the joy stick and wires if this helps.

That sounds good, I don't have the wiring details to hand but your circuit diagram would be a great help. I am just into rocker cover gaskets replacement at the moment so that and relation visit are keeping me busy.

It works. I found the blue wire where it entered the car under the dash (drivers side) cut it and connected a wire directly to the joy stick (common blue wire). Perfect mirror control. I now am attempting to split the blue wire and connect it to where the blue passenger wire enters near the fuses. Just dont know how this is wired in the door until I can take off the door card. The connection into the window motor is based on the center wire being the common wire. It is marked 1 on the motor. Mine was the brown wire.
