s2 gearbox oil

hi ive started on the eng and box now and ive noticed the g/box is filled with red auto trans fluid is this correct as the info ive read seems to contradict ie steve heath,haynes manual and a few posts on here... whats in yours?

Well I replaced the ATF which was in my LT77 gearbox with Castrol SMX. I have to say that the gear change when cold is now much better, with reverse selecting without crunching.

Don't know whats in mine, but I hope it isn't ATF. The owners handbook for the S3 says API GL5 75W90.

The ATF gearbox is a V8 thing.
If you want V8 gearbox oil info do some searchng on the griff & chim forums, there's loads.

My S3 has had ATF in the gearbox for years and no problems so far despite the 103k to date.

There have been many discussions on other forums about the correct oil for a Type 9 and the opinion is that GL5 is not good for the synchro rings. Better to use a GL4 oil - that's what I run and it is working fine.
