Ken - to be honest - no idea.
However my guess is that there would have been a decent amount of clearance when the engine mounts were new, now they have sagged a bit with age I would imagine you can't be far off the original engine location with your spacers.

Not sure how you would do it but it would be worth someone else measuring how much clearance there is under the bonnet.

Clearance on mine looks to be around 15-20mm now, thats with new mounts fitted a few months back. I've seen that sort of figure, perhaps a bit more, mentioned on here before but I've no idea what the 'ideal' is nor how much clearance there is under the bonnet. The mounts have definitely sagged a little though since fitting.

Clearance on mine is almost zero, but that's a V8.

Not sure what the clearance is on mine at the moment, but if you haven't fitted the exhaust, when you do this will help to give guidance. I have fitted new engine mounting and found that with the engine lifted up the exhaust is close to hitting the chassis bar.
So I would say that somewhere in between sump hitting and exhaust hitting the chassis bar is about right?

Hi Ken
Mine is around 20-25mm after fitting new mounts and Clarenceboddiger donated shims (thanks again Ken wink). the exhaust was adjusted when being refitted after doing the mounts and is not a problem.
If you want to know what clearance you have, make little "bluetack" towers on all of your highest points, close the bonnet carefully, reopen and see how much they have been compressed... a bit Heath Robinson I know but I did this for the same reason and was pleased that I had plenty of clearance...

K wink

Ken - I didn't make it clear but at each end of the car there are 2 straps, with the ratchet for each strap on opposite sides of the car.

Let down one strap slightly (the other one will hold it) then tighten it again so it is a bit slack.
You need to make sure you have a decent amount coiled on the ratchet or it can pull through.
Release the tight strap so the body drops down to the other strap.
The trick is to only drop a small amount at a time - I tried it with mine before I got it too high - I didn't want it to be stuck up in the roof without a way to get it down!

It sounds a right faff but once you've done it a few times you get a rhythm going and it becomes easier.

Once you've released a certain amount from the straps you'll have to undo it completely and pull some strap through before ratcheting it up again - otherwise it gets to the point that you've released all the strap coiled on the ratchet and it just sails through the ratchet, then your car is a project for ebay!

Hope this makes sense!

Chris

....and its the same when you lift the body - you only raise it a few inches and the ratchet strap reel is full.
So raise it so far on one strap then with that one holding the car free off the other one then ratchet it up with that one, keep working them alternatively until you're as high as you want to go. The body does try to tilt towards the strap you're tightening but its easy just to push the body back level.

I was worried that the straps would mark the car - but after jacking mine up you can't even tell where the straps have been even on the edges of the rear wheel arches.

I used 5 ton straps 50mm wide (got 9 for £50 on ebay), if you have beams in your garage just throw the hook over and for the ratchet hook it to itself, and for the strap thread it through the hook slip knot style.
I'm off in the garage in a bit to take some pics (need a rest tonight) so I'll get some pics of them.

Ken here's what I mean in terms of mounting the straps - only works if you have beams that are not too big - mine are about 4 inch by 1.5 inch.

You'll have to squint and pretend the bit of wood is a beam!

Hang the hook over the beam

Hook the strap hook back onto the strap itself.

So it ends up like this.

For the long part of the strap place it over the beam

Thread the strap through the hook - its better one way round than the other or the hook digs into the strap - I think I got it wrong just about every time.

strap fitted

Here's some pics of my straps
