Clutch Master/Slave Cylinder
Discussion
I have a 1989 TVR S2 (2.9 Cologne engine) and I can't find any detail in Steve Heath's great book about donor vehicles. I need to replace the Master and/or Slave cylinder and I need to know the donor vehicle (Granada, Sierra, Capri???) or, even better, a part number and manufacturer. With luck I will be on the road again before the end of the weekend!
Sadly, I beleive, the cutch cylinder and slave cylinder were bespoke items. However it is still possible to pick them up for a reasonable amount. www.tvrcarparts.com sells them. I got mine from there last year and think its was about £100 for the lot.

Hi Daniel
have you seen the Alternative parts List ? it does show some part numbers which might help your search.

Hi, RT racing did a PDF of parts which I posted a link to on here somewhere about 18 months ago.
IIRC the parts can be either Lockheed or Girling. I replaced both mine but one of them had a slightly different size case. We got over that by taking the new workings out and putting them back in the old case. I hope that makes sense (I'm no mechanic - clearly

)I'd put a new set of seals in my clutch master cylinder a few years ago and it started to weep slightly last year so decided to get a new cylinder. I spent ages trying to find one and eventuallly got one which was the correct bore etc but when I had it fitted I found the connection on the top of the cylinder for the pipe to the slave cylinder was too small. I had to take out the plunger assy from the new one and put it into the old one which incidentally didn't appear to have any scoring or any other faults and it has been fine. You may be able to get away with new seals which aren't hard to fit. The alternative is to pay the money and get cylinder from a specialist like TVR Car Parts - at least you know it'll fit whereas I paid about £50 and only effectively used new seals which I could have got for about £10.

The master cylinder was originally Triumph I believe (Although I could be wrong). Repair kits were available for it a couple of years ago, I got one from a Triumph specialist at the NEC Classic Car Show. I normally keep the serial numbers and such like for this type of stuff so I'll have a look whether I've got them and post them.
One word of warning, if you do go down the rebuild route, replace the spring. I had one catastrophically fail about 2 years after rebuilding the mastercylinder causing the clutch jam on at a set of traffic lights!
I eventually replaced my original master cylinder with a landrover unit and swapped the actuating rods over. It had the same hole diameters / spacing to fit the bulkhead, but needed the hydraulic union on the clutch pipe changed. I seem to remember it cost me around £10 for the master cylinder so changing the union / clutch pipe was well worth it.
I dare say the slave cylinder is probably Truimph or something similar also. I've only ever rebuilt this with a repair kit (from David Geralds I think) and now have a standby spare repair kit from Ebay.
Best bet would be to take the offending item off the car, take it along to a local motor factor and get them to match it up. If they don't have it / can't get it, they might be able to point you in the direction of a specialist who may be able to help. It worked for me and its how I ended up at a Landrover specialist buying a master cylinder for £10!
Another option would be to try somewhere like Moss or Rimmer brothers who specialise in spares Triumph /BL parts.
