my alternator shows a charge rate of only 13 volts on the gauge ive checked at the battery when its running with a multimeter and it is 13 volts, it used to be higher before, the battery is new, is there a problem here as i thought it should charge at a little over 14 volts

Are you looking at the voltmeter in the car?
If so mines rubbish - it says 11 volts most of the time.

OK well it does when the car has a body and a battery and an engine and ....

Ken

assuming you are revving the engine above 2500 RPM ? I had a similar problem after last winters refurb and was advised to check for the ignition light bulb which creates a load to get the alternator to start charging... Does your ignition light come on ?

If you are only seeing 13v above 2500 rpm and your ignition light is working OK sounds like your alternator is duff.

Mine was duff and Clarencboddiger kindly donated a replacement which is still going strong... (thanks again Ken - when does the warranty expire hehehehe )

Good Luck

hi the ign light comes on and goes out at approx 2500 rpm as per normal the gauge in the car shows 13v a multimeter at the battery shows the same.it does not alter from tickover up to 3000 rpm. it used to go up to 15v before the rebuild so not sure whats going on as the alternaor seems to have some output although not enough

are the alternator brushes good?

have you done a continuity check ? - remove the multi-plug and check between each terminal and earth - an open circuit is usually the bulb - which you have confirmed is OK...

Are all the connections good and clean, a dirty connection on the positive side will reduce the voltage.

check the regulator - with the engine at 3000 rpm you should have between 3 to 5 amps and the voltage should be 13.7 to 14.5 v if not then the regulator is faulty - if its that, I could donate the regulator from my old alternator for you to try...

good luck
