What have i got?

I've just entered the world of TVR ownership for the first time and my first question is one that i think a lot of people ask... Have i got an S1 or an S2. I've read up on it, its registered in 1989 and the chassis number marking says its a 1989 module, its registered as a 280 S with the DVLA, but we all know how accurate they are. The Owners book was completed by the selling dealer as a 2.9 and the guy i bought it from says its an S2.... Its got an analogue clock if that helps, but no power windows... within the cahsssis number is "S229", which could suggest its a 2.9 s2, but thats likely way too obvious....

I'm really interested in finding out purely from the engine point of view, is there any obvious way of working out if its the 2.8 or 2.9?

The 2.9 (2933cc) V6 engine looks like this:


There are a numbers of cars that are basically S1 (wind-up windows, silver bumper strip, etc), but with a 2.9 engine. These are often referred to as "S1.5", but TVR sold them as S2.

Looks like an S2 to me from the eBay pics and the year.

2.8 or 2.9 ... well basically, the 2.8 looks like this

Many S2's are registered as 280S (mine is) - TVR didn't bother to change it with the DVLA. As long as it says 2933cc, you're OK.

Yes, but at least you found engines in TVRs. My picture shows the rusty rearward-facing Ford manfolds, betraying it's Sierra/Granada origins.

I think you've got TVR S disease - it isn't fatal, can cost some money but is loads of fun so welcome!

Dont worry about the V5, my S2 was a 290 and so is my V8S
